Toyota announced the official last day of the only West Coast automotive plant to be April 1st. This factory is known to produce the vast majority of Camry's and Tacoma's in the US.

Makes one wonder about the quality of workmanship, when all 4,700 workers know their last day isn't far off. :notsure:

So my question is, what other factory is going to pick up the slack?

And, will Tacoma's made between now and April 1st have all the recall's fixed?

    Let's hear your input

    Thanks

I know the toyota plant here in san antonio is gonna start producing tacomas in addition to the tundra lineup. I'm just not sure when they start production or if its started already.

Hopefully the paint quality goes up now that they don't have to comply with California's environmental laws. :D

Thanks Fern, I'm glad to hear it's already in movement.

Apparently, the whole reason it is shutting down is due to GM claiming bankruptcy and leaving the partnership with Toyota last summer.

I gather the incentives aren't large enough. Sucks!

    Good Point! :D

Have you heard anything about the Tacoma's? I recently ordered mine and it is currently being built in the Nummi factory then by train to MD.
Supposed to be here by mid-March.
    We shall see

I have a 4x4 TRD off road on order. Makes me wonder about the overall build when 4700 people know they about to be canned. Hopefully mine is from Mexico. Maybe I need to find out.

Fawk. I feel bad for the workers. Being laid off is horrible. :(

That's all we need is more unemployed folks in Cali. We're at 12% now. :pout:

That's my thoughts. Sad to think made in US now means junk.

I would like you to explain your reasoning. Please tell me why you think that each of the 163,000 Tacomas produced each year at NUMMI are somehow inferior to the Tacomas produced in Baja California, Mexico?

    Inquiring minds want to know.

Lets not get emotional ok ?

It is a fact ... anytime you have American workers make anything .. it turns out crap because they just don't care .

    FACT

    YMMV

but really I don't care what you think I -- you aren't spending my money .
How are things going in your STATE ?
    Enough said ............

From what iv heard nummis shutting down jsut because it wasnt cost efficient. thye have been in negotiations with the union forever and since the union wouldnt back down any it wasnt economically fessible (spelling?) to keep production there

The NUMMI factory is being shut down because of GM. It was a shared platform plant. GM tanked and production was next to nothing on the GM products.

This plant is Union and it made fiscal sense for Toyota to re-tool the TX plant to the tune of a few hundred million vs. re-negotiate union wages.

The plant is not being shut down due to quality AT ALL. The quality out of the plant has never been a question.
