    Inferior Chinese steel is being used everywhere in the U.S. Bridges,cars,trucks and buildings.Corporate Lobbyists,Congress and Wall Street are to blame.

    A state senate investigation revealed that these boltsmade with shoddy steel—weren’t properly tested. But the bolts were part of a design approved by the state’s transportation agency, procured by a third party contractor from a manufacturer in China.

    The Bay Bridge’s new eastern span cost $6.4 billion, and its failures are attracting the ire of the region’s taxpayers, legal experts, and those interested in driving over a piece of public works that will survive the next major earthquake and fifty to one hundred years of normal wear and tear.

    I don't think they can legally confiscate your truck.

    Is this a California thing, or are y'all just to nice and accepting... I swear to God if I dropped my truck of for service... Hell if I dropped my truck off specifically for this very issue, and they then told me they were not going to give it back to me for potentially months.... I would fucking loose my shit, I don't give a crap about the reason, it's my property!

    I wouldn't leave that damn dealership, unless it was in my own vehicle, or possibly in hand cuffs. How are y'all ok with this? This hasn't even happened to me and still pisses me off. I would go drive that loner into the ocean and tell them you'll be needing another.

    This is from the Toyota - USA Newsroom site, it is dated 4/27/2017

    [IMG]

    No notifications 'til mid-June;
    No leak = re-torque the housing;
    Leak = replace gasket and fasteners (minimum), replace differential if damage found;

    Any time a suspension or driveline part is replaced it is common for makers to require new fasteners be used--it's a CYA thing...

    That's just a little bit of weeping, re-torque the fasteners...

    My '17 TRD Sport DC LB AT (currently at 1300 miles and 1.5 months old) is on the recall list. I crawled under the truck (not easy for an arthritic 68 year old) and checked the differential. Dry as a bone.

    A naive question and perhaps answered elsewhere in this thread (I don't necessarily read all the posts in a thread that is 7 pages long):
    Could the conditions for the recall (leakage, failure) arise at any time, or should at least leakage be evident from the beginning?

    I'm inclined to wait for the recall letter before taking it into the dealership, on the assumption that they will be better prepared for addressing the issue. Any thoughts / recommendations on how best to monitor the situation during the meantime?

    Thanks.

    I would drive it until you receive the letter. Don't touch the bolts obviously and keep an eye on it for any seeping or leaking.

    This is fundamentally what I would do--except that me being me I'd just re-torque the fasteners myself and be done with it.

    That is all the dealer will do if there is no leaking. Also there is no time limit on recalls so should it actually be leaking in the future Toyota will be required to address the problem...

    Well I would be tempted to do the same, but there was one fellow on here who did the same and busted one of the studs right off at only 33 ft lbs!

    I thought those bolts were to be set @ 18 ft lbs.

    Toyota has not authorized any of the dealers to fix anything until they come up with the "remedy" yes we know what they are supposed to do. But the official Toyota Recall document sent to the dealers specifically states that trucks found to be leaking shall be held until a remedy is available from Toyota in several weeks. Most likely means they have to train and allocate techs available to complete the work. All they guys who have had leaks and took the trucks in still don't have the truck and no eta when they will get them back.

    So what happens they let you drive off in your truck after they said it needs to be fixed and while on the highway your rearend locks up and you take out a few people?

    Come to think of it, I think it was 18 ft lbs that he twisted it off with. I think you're right.

    kinda why I'm not touching mine, they break em, they fix em! Not to
    mention if they see it, they'll know you fuked with it and could easily
    point the finger at you for issues they may 'claim' are outside of the recall.

    I saw that post, it was 33 lb·ft no surprise it sheared off:

    Another thing to mention, I do not know what size torque wrench that poster had used, but 18 lb·ft is far too low a torque to attempt with a 1/2" drive wrench (that which most people have)--a 3/8" drive wrench, typically 5 to 50 lb·ft range, should be used...

    Bad shit. I would imagine you would have to sign a liability waiver before leaving. However, if it's THAT bad, they should pull all of the trucks off the road right now. Toyota is exposed right now if they don't.
