Under Hood mount air compressor

Ah ok.
Same place my dual battery uses.
I'm looking for another creative location

 

Not bad we have one in my girls car, but I have and recommend the 88p model over the cig lighter port for your truck as it gives you room to grow into bigger tires, runs directly off your battery, and faster inflation time.

 

It was just a suggestion for op, since hea only inflating tires. Im sure both are valid options for something that requires little to no install/diy.

 

Yup great suggestion, I was just informing them of the superior model that's only slightly more expensive. I own them both and wanted to help someone if they were looking at the cigarette lighter option.

 

Not quite under the hood but I use it after wheeling. Works like a charm.

I also have a 2nd battery on the passenger side. I took a gamble and bought the 2015 (2nd Gen) version of the Slee compressor mount which holds the compressor vertically in the front of the engine bay between the washer fluid tank and the radiator.
It is a tight squeeze, but it does fit on the 3rd Gen. The one caveat is that I had to make my own upper bracket to make it work. Having done that, it is rock solid and I can have my dual batteries AND compressor under the hood.
I'm at work now, so don't have any pics to show, but I can post some this afternoon when I get home if you need.

I'm new to off-roading. I know that you should air down in sand, but how much? Also, I am doing lots of desert rocky roads and my truck is completely stock including tires. Should I air down on rocky roads - I live in AZ (not gravel)? If so, how much? Does it provide a smoother ride, or is it just for more traction on steep slickrock? Any advice is helpful.

 

If you get the tuffy box it'll fit in the bed cubby.
Also, maybe consider Co2. I put a tank together fairly inexpensively and love it so much the compressor is in backup status now.

 

I live in AZ as well. Airing down defiantly helps with traction in sand, mud, snow or anywhere else more flotation is beneficial.
To be honest I primarily air down to smooth out rough trails. Depending on the quality of the roads I'm driving I'll run anywhere from 12 to 20 psi.

 

Thanks - very helpful. maybe I'll try around 20 on a road like schnebly hill road Sedona to see how the ride feels. I guess at lower pressures one needs to be more mindful of potentially breaking the bead right? In other words slow down on the tight turns.

 

Exactly! I actually did Schnebley hill from Flag to Sedona a couple weeks ago and ran at about 15psi. Its a very rough road but I never needed to use 4x4. I'm sure there are lots of opinions on this but I wouldn't worry too much about losing a bead over 10 psi.

 

Again, thanks a bunch. That road is not bad...beautiful, - I did it in a subaru forester years ago. However, maybe airing down the tires will make the wife and kids more excited for trips like that if it is smoother. I'll have to look up some AZ threads and see if there are some trips coming up to try to get out and meet some people.

Basically you'll need you start with a tank. I'd recommend either 10 to 20 lbs tank. You can search Craigslist for a deal on a beverage type tank or possibly convert a Co2 fire extinguisher to the proper valve (I asked the guy that hydrotested my tank and he said it's possible).

I order a hyperflow adjustable regulator from wheelers. They have 2 different types, adjustable and and non-adjustable. The non would be fine for most and much cheaper. After that I just ordered cheap recoil airline and fittings from Amazon.

Considering powertanks cost $500 or more and this does the same thing it's a steal!

 

This is very awesome. How's it been working for you? Any fears of heating any of the components around it when the compressor gets hot?

I need to find a space like this, so I can run dual battery in the spot next to the passenger fender.

 

I think one of the vendors onsite was talking about mounting the compressor between the grill and radiator..... lots of room there.

 

Excuse my incompetence but curious to know what is the purpose running 2 batteries on the Tacoma.

 

A second battery is typically used when your truck is immobile for a period of time and you run electrical accessories while doing so. For example, when camping you might run a fridge, lights, and compressor while the truck is off. A second battery keeps your starting battery from draining so you don't get stranded.

 

It works great actually. I've had zero issues with it. No worries about heating anything nearby, nothing is 'that' close and everything has a good amount air space around it for ventilation.
