You can take still shots of evrey hit and injury in the game of hockey to make it look like a premeditated cheap shot. Watch it in real time and you can see there was no intent and he was braceing/reacting as crosby fell into him.

Like i said if this was any other player this wiuld have been a no call.

Read my posts, I never said it was premeditated, but it was an opportunistic cheap shot. And the 'because it's Crosby' excuse is tired. That went out after Steckel got nothing for taking his head off in 2011, so try again.

I guess we will agree to disagree then.

I lump this in the same boat as someone tripping over another players stick and going head first into the boards and getting hurt. Huge difference between that, and getting hooked into it. Coming up with a term opportunistic cheap shot, yet not premeditated is just crazy, doesnt even make sense.

It's actually nothing like the tripping scenario that you described, so not commenting on that.

As far as 'not making sense' perhaps I didn't word correctly. I don't think his plan was to take Sid's head off from the start (premeditated intent to injure) but I think he definitely tried to take a piece of him on the way down (opportunistic), rather than just only protecting himself from the collision, as some people have been claiming.

Niskanen could of easily kept his stick lower. He targeted the head as he "watched the play" . What makes it dirty is he put force into it. He wasn't just trying to brace himself for a hit or fall. I think the right call was made to eject him. I know it's a part of hockey but I hate the dirty plays. Just out play the other team.

Usually I check in this time of year to express my butt-hurtedness over the Caps early exit while falling well short of expectations. I suspect Crosby will be back, and I suspect I will be making my annual post later next week.

Is that the play where O-Reilly got right back up and continued to skate down the ice and continue playing? Yes, totally the same level of incident there.:thumbsup:

He saw an opportunity to knock Crosby out and he took it. Anyone who thinks the Caps weren't hoping for an opportunity like that to make a play on Crosby that was in a gray area is just plain stupid.

That being said this reminds me of the PK Subban slash from a few years ago on Matt Stone. 5 minutes and a game pretty much eliminates the chance of getting extra games in the playoffs unless the league feels they can prove intent to injure. While that shot on Crosby last night was definitely opportunistic it wasn't premeditated to injure. I feel given the league history on the Subban slash the right call has been made by the league and on the ice.

I don't think Niskanen meant to cross check Crosby

Shit happens but I don't have issue with the refs calling the penalty , they don't get the benefit of replays

Now Crosby's amputation of Methot's finger...

    Good point. Very well said.

I honestly don't even want a suspension to Niski there....or Ovi for that matter. But I'm not going to sit here and listen to jabronis say it is a 'hockey play' or that there was no intent to for either one of those guys to get a crack in on Sid. That is total BS. I'm not saying they meant to concuss the guy or anything, or even injure on a really serious level but both guys took an opportunity to get in a shot. It wasn't accident or protecting themselves from collision etc. I know I am sounding like typical Pens fan to some, but you guys know I try to call it as I see it. And I truly try to not be 'that guy'.

I predict Sestito makes his way back into the Pens line up for the next game.

You're definitely being that guy. Considering Crosby is who he is, it would be hard to find an objective opinion on the hit. But, I think that the majority of fans without a dog in the fight would agree that it was not dirty. Do you really think Niski thought "oh shit, here comes Sidney Crosby, he's going down to the ice - here's my chance! Considering his history of concussions, let me see if I can put this stick across his face!"
