Guess I'm not explaining it well. In neutral at a light, light turns green and put it into drive. If I don't wait about 5 seconds before giving any throttle, truck behaves like it's not in gear, then slowly eases in. If I wait 5-10 seconds, then give it gas, we go just fine (just with a clunk). Make any sense? I'm not loading up the torque converter or doing burn outs. Just going...

The question is, why shift into neutral in an automatic?

If I had to guess, you have two things happening here: clunk from a worn u-joint and slow shift into drive due to some unknown transmission issue. Miles on your truck?
    ^This. Stop doing that.

I pop into neutral because keeping in drive causes my dash to vibrate.

Truck has 71k, trans has 818 miles. It's a factory rebuild. The people who drove the truck from Utah to here blew it up somewhere around Donner Pass and continued to drive to Sacramento.
