Also possible that when they try to torque the bolts they are snapping them off , then they may have to drill and try an easyout to remove them and the holes are getting screwed up . Now they need a complete new rear end casting to replace . They could use helicoils also but It would not be easy or a 100% success rate.

My dealer had Tacoma loaners (which was my first request) but didn't have any in stock. They were ready to pull a new one from the lot. But yes, that is an absolutely valid request.

The recall is not even out and people are taking their trucks in for seeps? I would wait for remedy and recall before I take truck in to avoid these long delays. If you have a dripping leak or bad leak then would consider jumping the gun. Toyota is more than likely delaying the release so they can position parts and maybe complete root cause analyst for final fix. Just thoughts.

It hit headline news last week with warnings that the rear diff could lock up while driving. Not shocked at all that people are eager to get this resolved

Either that or they figured out the axle housing itself cant take 18 ft-lbs or 33 ft-lbs of torque required by the bolts and its flexing at the flange causing the leak.

    None of this makes sense..

So they only confiscate your truck if you have a leak? But if not they just tighten your diff bolts?

    From what I know.

If no leak is found, then tighten bolts.

If leak is found, say bye bye to trucky for the 'fix'

The recall is out and in force. The 'recall letters' won't be out til june.

I went in for a routine oil change, when the recall popped up on the computer. At that point, they held me truck and gave me a loaner.

That's crazy! You could also spray some degreaser if you needed to go in but were afraid they would keep it.

Somehow though, I think your dealer is tripping.

    Read the big thread.

Here's one random latest post from someone in a different state than me.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...ntrol-of-vehicle.488536/page-45#post-15054167

My VIN is not on the recall, but I've got leaking. 2016 OR from Baja. Just called to set up an appointment with Toyota. Service advisor asked if I wanted the "good" news or "bad" news. Toyota will fix it, but they want to hold affected vehicles until they are fixed. He said they do not have the "parts???" yet and it could be 1-2 months. They said I'd get a rental until I get the truck. He said they just recently inspected 40 trucks and did not find any leaks, so he was surprised that mine was affected. We shall see on Friday.

Apparently trucks that were leaking but not on the list have been fixed under warranty within the day.

So basically if your on the list, leak and take your truck in. No truck for you.

If your not on the list, leak and take your truck in, trucked fixed soon for you.

    That is BS

How it was explained to me. And this could all be BS.

Is that when there is a recall issued, the 'fix' has to be done a very specific way. Not sure which way that is. This 'procedure' and specific parts are to be fully documented, etc.. and provided back to Toyota.

On the non-recalled trucks, they can just fix it the old fashioned way, and let people go on their way.

Guess I am splitting hairs, not posted on NHTSA, what I have seen is intent to release recall once remedy is determined (mid June). No NHTSA campaign number assigned yet. Anyway I would wait for release or serious leak. I have minor seep and not on vin list. Did check fluid level and it is good. Will not attempt retorque.

I'm pretty sure a lot of the confusion is how each tech/service departments defines a leak. My diff looks no worse than the pictures of weeping spots posted here, yet my dealer treats my failure as defcon 5.

Your are exactly right, it is all in the bureaucracy. Repair is the same, but 2 different processes because the paperwork says so.

    Mall landscaping pin stripes.
Double checked the diff housing, not a drop of seepage. Just the start of rust along the edge of the entire carrier. All this bullshit to keep the free oil change intervals in tact, it's almost worth it to do that bullshit myself like I already plan on doing.
