Dog help

I was wondering if anyone here has experience with dogs and can offer some advice. thanks

 

What kinda advice to you need. Then I might know if I'm in over my head.

well, i have been traveling for the past 3 years for my job, which i was laid off from 6 months ago. random people have been comong to the home, (freinds, family, etc) he has not had a collar on all this time becuase he can run around the yard to go to the bathroom and what not, well, i think i may have lost alph status in his mind and he has gotten aggresive and shows teeth and snaps now. wont allow a collar to go on him, cant cut his nails, . no collar means no leash, means cant get him to vet, and he is challenging me. i have basic skills to control him when he snaps, without violence, but anytime i attempt to collar and leash him, i will get bit if i let him. i was looking for a mile tranquilizer, i have heard benadryl, nyquil can act as a sedative, but i dont wanna hurt him, but by knockin him out so to speak , i can leash him, cut his nails, and get him used to again.

what suggestions to remedy this do you guys have

 

i watch that dog whisperer show sometimes, and he always says you need to stay calm and assertive, and stand over the dog and wait until he relaxes.
sounds like you need to spend some time and get this dog in order.

Seriously, if he is acting like you say, someone has more than likely abused him.

 

What kind of dog is it. Because I have helped train some very mean Belgium millions with out ever losing dominance. We kind of need to know the level you are at with the dog like his responsiveness to your voice what he does. Try to be assertive and calm but big with your voice if it starts to go south and dont show fear dogs pick up on it fast. Not going to lie but the most effective way to regain dominance is to hold them on there back by there neck just like when you see two dogs fight for dominance, but I would not start there unless you are confident you can do it safely.

 

i wouldn't suggest giving your dog any type of human medicine. the medicine is build to work on human bodies and dogs bodies will have different effects and most of the time can really damage there liver's or other organs. what type of dog do you have? how big is it

 

prob did get abused, dont know who or how it may have happened, so i cant get hung up on that, gotta stay positive and work on a resolution

he is a rat terrier, going to be 9 in sept. i would do the back thing like i did when he was a puppy, but not withouth armor because he will def go to bite me. here he is

I had the same problem with a brittany spaniel. You have to show him that you are the boss, and you can do without beating him. If he see you are scared YOU WILL NOT WIN. The behind the neck trick works, cause that is what I done. Remember, this is his only line of defense is to be aggressive. He he runs someone away or barks and snarls someone away, he thinks he has done something great. My local vet showed me a couple of tactics to handle Rebel to get him to his office, and it worked everytime. If a vet knows you will bring the dog to him for shots, check-ups, etc..., he will probably be willing to help you.

ya i've heard it from different vets different things. some say its okay to give certain medicines and then others say no human medicines. I would rather spend the extra money though and just buy a medicine made for dogs and be on the safe side than to give them somthing that could possible hurt them more. but ya its pretty much just depends on how you feel about what the vet tells you

 

I've had dogs my whole life. I have 2 now, a dachshund and a blind chow/ golden retriever mix. My fiance's family has 4 dogs and a wolf.

I had to break the alpha mentality with the dachshund.

If I were you, I'd start first on eye contact. Do NOT break eye contact until he breaks first.
i have been using this technique, its works quite well, just staring at him makes him back down afte rlike 2 - 30 seconds.

The tone of your voice is more important than the level. Shouting doesn't always work, especially if the dog is barking. In the dog mentality you're just barking with him.
i try my hardest not to yell at all or raise my voice, but sometimes i have to and it works...but i am getting away from that as quickly as possible

Wherever you are walking him now without a leash, make sure you go out the door first, and you go back inside first. That sets hierarchy for him.
this one i think i learned form dog whisperer, i always make him go out after i do and come in after i do,

When you eat, let him see you eating. Ignore him and always make sure you eat first. When you feed him, do a little bit by hand. Control the food. Put it in the bowl but don't let go of it, and give a little 'tsst' if he gets to close to it. You can hold it in front of him but have him sit first. Make sure to convey that you are in absolute control of the food and the space around you. Also, once you put it down, keep your hand on the bowl initially. You need to convey that it is YOUR food and you're allowing him to have some.
i do something similar with his food, but i will try using all these techniques.

Same thing with furniture or beds. Don't let him on the couch or bed. Hope that helps.
he knows he cannot be on the upstairs furniture or the bed, he knows he has only 1 spot on the top of the couch by the window so he can look outside,

see, i told you a thread would work. i must be a f*ckin psychic. what dude said^^^ i dominated my cousins dog by grabbing his neck and knocking him on his side. i got close to him (while still grabbing his neck) and growled till he stopped moving around. i made him by bitch good luck man.

 

i may have to try that one,,, maybe a nice pair of leather work gloves, a few sweaters, and boom instant dog suit, then i ll go to work onthat... i tried a dog forum and that seems to be general consensus. make him submit. i called my vet today because he needs his shots, and they told me to go pick up a tranquilizer pill to give before hand so that i can leah him up and take him in, so that he can get shots, then i go from there.

 

or you can be a mexican throw a chancla (sandal) or smack him with a broom. funny thing, today went to a customers pad to read the meter. older couple mid 60's. and they have a mean effin chow monster dog. but the old man, dude can barely walk, punks the dog like no other. the dog drops his ears and tail when the geezer talks. funny shit. you can also try a spray bottle with water.

Show your dog that you are dominent and when it shows teeth hold its mouth together and say nooo! And if it continues do the same but twist its ear. Trust me it sounds mean but its a animal and it has to know its place.
