I am too. I've always debated getting rid of my first gen for a TJ or an LJ but having a truck bed and being able to tow is so useful. Time for an SAS :drevil:

I kept my Tacoma. The truck is for work and play. The Jeep is for playing really hard.

My buddy got a 2007 Jeep JK (or some other weird letters). We wrenched on it pretty quickly putting suspension and such. The Jeep is AWESOME offroad. I decided to upgrade my old S10 to a 2012 Tacoma so we can be manly men doing manly this together. He was impressed with a bone stock ACLB 4X4 keeping up with him.
Of course I have thrown some goodies on the Tacoma since then. The way I see Jeep or Tacoma, I can not live without a pickup truck. My wife can not ride in something that rattles AT ALL. The Jeep excels at a lot of things offroad, but I would never have one as a daily. I was also let down with the cost of all the bits and pics I have purchased for the Toyota. "Back in my day" $500 would buy a TON of crap for the Toyota pickups of the 80s. Now, not so much. The aftermarket HEAVILY favors the Jeep on selection and affordability

Not sure if this has been covered, but my opinion is jeeps basically come "out of the box" ready to wheel. Tacomas bone stock can still perform great off road as well, but you tend to rub all over. Both great cars though too.

For most places, yes. If you want to run hard in the desert an IFS Taco is probably a better starting point.

One thing I dont like about the older wrangers are the wheel base it to short. You can find many Jeep video roll overs due to 35"+ tires combined with a short wheel base a good sized lift.

I get that Jeeps are off road monsters, but they certainly seem to have their "quirks." So why am I seeing them all over the place when most of these will never go off road?

Because you're in Alabama. It's the same here in TN. They're fad vehicles. Just like Tacomas in California and Hawaii.

    Anyone seen my wallet?
They did a damn good job of making the JK look/feel less utilitarian. Even if you dont wheel, its a nice looking ride that has a lot of built in capability, in case you do find yourself in a rock bed.

Mmhm. Imagine all the Jeeps you see out in AL and replace them with Tacos. Pretty much how it is.

I don't think they're a "fad". Tacoma's are mid size trucks that are useful/good for many line of jobs. So although not everyone may be modding their Tacoma to off road it, people still put them to good use. Just my opinion of course. As for the jeep, seems to me that ever since they came out with the 4-door, more people did start buying them and yeah you see plenty with big tires, and "bro bars" yet never seem to touch the dirt.
