Yes, I have read and searched through the forums...

It seems to me like the clunking I am experiencing is an issue called axel wrap. I understand the addition of traction bars help/solve axel wrap. The only problem is, I can't find what I am looking for. I need something that bolts on due to my lease. Just cant seem to find what Im looking for... any suggestions?

Mine does it too. Dealer says normal. Been that way since I bought it.. hard downshift when rolling to stop. Like axle wrap

I don't have that issue, but I have a real bed (the long bed) and my U-bolts were tight per spec from the get go... :D

But on a more serious note, this issue has been around for quite some time, and if there was one single thing that causes it, I'm sure someone would have nailed it by now. Rather there seems to be a number of things that can cause it.
I hope in your case at least it does, if it does let us know.

    Good luck!
    Cheers!

Not to hijack the thread OP.....but can anyone tell me how they can tell when it is axle wrap as opposed to being a transmission issue? Mine does the clunk on occassion, usually when cold.

Sorry not to have an answer to your question OP.

I've had it since a month or two after buying mine. 16k on the truck and 1.5 years later still annoying as fuck and dread the morning commute (when it happens 99% of the time).

TRD Off Road 4x2 SB here.

There is no such thing as "axle wrap."

    Easy fix.

    1. Jack up truck.

    2. Grease all zerks.

    3. Trade-in for 2nd gen.

This isn't a BS thread. If you're not going to help, keep your BS comments to yourself and move on to the next thread.

I thought I read on here that someone had resolved it by lubing the driveshaft slip joint splines?

Mine is always when cold. That first big stop from 40+mph to zero. I now just pump the brakes to try to avoid it...but always mange to cringe when I'm in the not so sweet spot.

I primarily do long stops too, I'm not one of those last minute slam on the brakes kind of drivers.

I get it once in a while. Second gen did it too even with an AAL. I was really hoping the rear springs in these would be better.

Tried lubing the driveshaft and didn't resolve it.

I do the same here, the first couple of stops I try to let the truck down shift but not to the point that it'll clunk. I hate when people ask "what was that?" so fkn annoying

Same here...embarassing. And the two times I had the dealer check it they couldn't reproduce it...so I had them reflash my transmission cause I have no idea about how that stuff works.

Embarrassing, yup that's it! Dealer also couldn't replicate. The last time I heard about this issue I heard that Toyota was working on another Transmission update to resolve this issue. I'm thinking it's has something to do with the RPMs not in sync with the downshift because my truck seems to lunge forward when I get that clunk when rolling to a stop.

The reflash resolved the lunge from 2nd to 1st...so happy about that. Good to know that I'm not completely crazy (yet) thinking it was just me.

Still love the truck with its flaws and gonna ride it to the ground...or at least to the eND of the extended warranty. Time will tell if it'll make it to 300k like my first gen did before I sold it :angrygirl:. At least 10 tons of dirt and gravel hauled in the bed, towing a trailer, and several large item moves and it at least still drives smooth like day one....at least until I stop.

Op, If it'll help any, my old T4R would occasionally "clunk" when coming to a stop specially on a long 70+ mph trip. 4spd auto, different rear end configuration didn't do it when I wanted it to do it so I could worry about it, just at random, once in a while thing. No front drive shaft (2WD) so I attributed it to the auto trans missing a beat or something.
IDK if it was low on ATF, I never checked it, but I doubt it since it worked like a fine Swiss watch till the day I traded for my current Swiss watch.

I think in some cases its the auto, and for some it could be other thing(s).

Hope you nail yours, my hammer maybe helpless here.
    Cheers!
