    Used to get .25 cents a tail for whistle pigs from the farmers where I grew up. Wish I was closer.. Go out at sunset and blow into an empty .22 shell and they will lift their heads out of the hole. At 100+ plus yards will challenge your shooting skills especially offhand. Which is likely why I earned my distinguished expert medal at a young age.

    I used to collect barb wire. Could find it growing in trees that were a hundred years old or older back when they used horses and rock sleds to clear the fields.

    My grandfather used to make knifes out of old steel files that were worn ,he taught me how to grind and quench them. I have a lot of knives but need a slicing knife for brisket. Bang for the buck looking at this even though it is made in China, that Damascus thing is addicting and started with shotgun barrels. It is only a 9" and a bit short for smoked brisket but think going to pull the trigger on it.

    Pretty sure the crew was all over 6' tall in case the boat sunk they could walk to shore. But honestly they were all pretty decent, a lot of them rotated between Currituck Coast Guard Station, NC and Alaska got to know a few of them well. Pretty decent sailors.

    Maximum power, only a few pics of 4 US Birdfarms together in the history of the USN. Before Desert Shield\Storm and Aftercare operations spent more than 3 years at sea over a 4 year period. Made Chief on the USS America before the shit hit the fan. Don't fuck with the name America.

    Hey I spent a few years on a LSD with LCAC's in the well deck. Those LCAC's are something else. I can also tell you that when your on the midwatch moored to the pier and Officer of the deck and have to take a piss it is a long ways down to the well deck. And everyone in a quarter mile can hear your piss hit the bottom with those 6x6 timbers and echo. Petty Officer of the Watch bring me another cup of coffee damn it.

    Nice,
    Give the China knife a try can't hurt a good name brand Damascus blade from a maker here lol several hundred dollars. Making knives from old rasps is fairly common from what I understand some I have seen pictures of had really nice patterns to them. I just watch to learn tricks and it is fun lol the 72 year old guy has probably forgotten more about making knives then the guy who won but it is what it is. The old man was still done in 3 days not 5 lol :} I play round with hot metal but not for knives but I do want to try to make Damascus when I am all healed up I could just become good at that and sell it made up for knife makers :} Hydraulic Press and a power hammer both of which I have plans to build ( way to expensive to buy for a hobby) a forge and some understanding of metal working and well lol we shall see.

    We have a few of the more entry level priced Shun knives. Haven't worked our way up to Damascus yet.

    I have to admit as much as it is movie cgi it was an awesome show when they used the old USS Missouri to light up the aliens. About the same chills as watching Spooky on a run or a pack of hogs coming over the ridge .

    I have not tried them yet I did see somewhere on Alton Browns page he recommended them but his own knives he has are like my fathers old meat market knives high carbon blades those suckers you can split a frog hair with when sharpened. I need to get some new ones my old carbon steel from Chicago Cutlery are getting thin. How do you like them ? They sharpen well on a Tri Stone or do you have go to really high grit stones ?

    I only have a Lansky set of diamond stones. From coarse to their 1000 ultra. The ultra is nice if you want to polish the edge but can't say that it actually removes any metal. I've been eyeballing some of Shun's hand hammered models. Love the look.

    Ohh pretty shiny .... I am reading some of the reviews on a Students set lol I too want to know how the hell you break a blade on an avocado unless you caught the edge and twisted sideways which well you would deserve what happens lol

    Knife set was a disappointment. One of the knifes broke slicing and avocado. Amazon was gracious enough to take the set back but I only got a partial refund. Big big disappointment!!

    I fully agree with Brian above. There is no statistically relevant way that VG-10 or Shun's VG-MAX variant could possibly fail as you described, barring misuse. I can crush even an underripe avocado with my hands and watch the material ooze through my fingers. The biggest concern is obviously the pit, but even if you sliced through with all your might you're more likely to lodge the blade in the pit (or injure yourself) before the it has any chance of failing (this is, of course, taking into account the average hardness of an avocado pit relative to the typical sharpness of a high quality Japanese knife at 16º per side). And if it did lodge and you broke it by twisting it along an in appropriate axis to set it free, that's your fault. There is also the possibility that by "broke" you mean you merely chipped the edge. There is a 20% chance the pit caused this, and 79% chance that it was the result of using an improper cutting surface like granite, marble, glass, or something along those lines. In any case, even if you really did manage to receive a defective knife that did indeed break or even chip under normal, proper conditions, Shun would've done the right thing given its warranty. They either would've repaired to perfection or swapped the knife. I don't work for Shun or endorse them in any way, but I am a knife enthusiast deeply interested in purchasing this set. I generally scan negative reviews to gain perspective. I genuinely thought this was unfair, not just to Shun, but to any knife maker using such an awesome steel and applying such renowned craftsmanship in their wares.

    How could a VG-10 Stainless Steel blade made in Japan break while slicing through an avocado? Now you know why you got a partial refund! You can slice an avocado with a dull butter knife.

    I wonder if the hammered sides help with slices not vacuum sealing them selves to the side of the blade ie potatoes etc lol

    I'm thinking it's more for aesthetics. They offer the hammered versions even in bread knives.

    I have one blade that has a hollow ground blade it works well for that I was just thinking the uneven surface would prevent surface tension vacuum . I might order one https://www.amazon.com/Shun-TDM0727...96&sr=8-8&keywords=Shun's+hand+hammered+Knife and see how it performs . I only use 5 maybe 6 different knives total anyhow so how bad could the cost be lol :}
