Rule of thumb is 10% of the trailer weight on the tongue. The longer the distance from axle to the hitch the better. For a light trailer you can have 20% tongue weight without issue.
Best bet is to go measure a U haul trailer(the little ones that wiggle all over the road), and DO NOT build it like that. :)

 i found google gave me the answer I was looking for but took 3 pages of links to go through... I think I am going to do about the same dimensions as Jlee's trailer and copy his base frame design seeing as a trailer can only really be made so many ways...

id like the box width of the trailer to be a little bit wider than that of the wheel wells in the bed of the truck... i forget the dimensions but maybe like 5 inches wider all together... trailer over all length from ass to tongue I would like to be maybe 7.5-8 feet. Maybe like a 65 inch x 4' x 30 box... have some sort of other tool box on the front of the trailer as well for more storage... lots of shit to tods up in my head but first things first is going to be frame obviously... gonna have to play around with length and width for a while... gonna go pick up some wood and cut to different sizes to lay it out

I was thinking about it. By the time I would get it finished, it would end up parked in the nursing home lot.....

Lol! I think if I compile all the parts and convince my roommate to kinda stop being a pussy about his new truck having to be in the garage (2017 GMC denali Duracrap) I can get it road worthy in 2 months...

I might be racking your brain a bit when this shit starts to go down... i need to find out more about the timbren system before I make a decision on suspension type

    : thumbsup:

Timbren i.e. torsion axles are not bad for light trailers. I had a trailer with one. Hopped a bit when empty, but with a 1/2- 1 ton on it, towed well.

I didn't have a torsion axle though. I just built my trailer with a straight axle. I did a 3500 lbs straight axle with 4" lift Jeep YJ leaf springs. Add some shocks to it and it's good to go.

I don't plan on ever wheeling with the damn thing hooked up really... but I know that torsion axles are better in most cases... and I like the fact of more ground clearance... maybe itll be a thing I have to think about... maybe theyll have to be the last part of the trailer since the way I want to design it I can add fenders on after its all in place and then just figure out axles and suspension bolt and weld and roll
    It out

Absolutely. Whatever suits you best! I went with straight axle for simplicity and cost effectiveness. That first trailer I built I ended up selling haha but my new trailer still has a straight axle lol. I do want to be able to take mine on some easier trails and stuff like that and to get me out in the middle of nowhere so that's why I thought a leaf sprung trailer would work best for me. Definitely do like the torsion axles though!

What was the cost of your axle and suspension if you don't mind me asking? The timbrens are right around 1000 I think with electric brakes and everything already on em... just would need wired up (im good with trailer electrical work).

Well Jlee hit me up... he said overall length of his trailer is around 11 feet.. so I think 9-11 feet it is... width will be next... @Sub-Zero im gonna need to borrow your CAD skills once I have everything all drawn out!

    Was pretty cheap.

3500 lbs axle with electric brakes was $330 I think

Hmmm... might go this route to get it rolling and then maybe once I can figure out torsion axles and shit go from there and sell the axle

That wasn't factoring the cost for leafs and the lift kit and shit though was it?

No sorry, leaf springs were cheap. I think I got them for $120 for the set

All the leaf spring hardware (spring perches, hangars, u bolts, shackles) was like $200

So $330+$120+$200 = $650 ish still not too bad
