Haven't been biking in a while, but my vote would be a hardtail 29'er with a front shock that locks out. Pretty versatile bike. You could throw some mild tires on there and put the knobbies back on if you decide to mountain bike. Lots of options depending on your budget.

That being said, I have a 2007ish dual suspension Stumpjumper (XL frame) with front and rear lockouts, hydraulic disc brakes, and a Marzocchi fork that I'd part with for cheap ;)

That's scary Chris. Were you able to swing it around and dig yourself out? Luckily you were in a beast of a machine.

Pretty much what Don said, I ride about 80/20 road/mountain it is much quicker and easier to get a ride in if I just hop on my road bike. As far as road bikes go I prefer a steel frame, I have two Vintage Schwinns that I retrofitted with modern drivetrains. One is fixed and one is a full Shimano Claris build. I don't take it to serious so I don't need an uber fast carbon bike, they feel too flimsy to me anyway.

My mountain bike was a bit of an impulse buy and way overkill for what I am capable of. But I love it and it feels like a Ferrari, depending on your budget Santa Cruz is hard to beat. But there are plenty of affordable options. Jamis is one that is great value. http://www.jamisbikes.com/usa/trailxseries.html

I like the 27.5'' wheel but many larger riders prefer the 29'' wheel or ''29er'' similar to 37s vs. 40s. Maneuverability vs go over everything lol.

Mose models will have sizes so I would suggest going to a Mikes bikes or something like that and trying out what feels comfortable.

Figure out what size you need, this is super important, I would suggest going to at least 2 bike shops/REI to get a second opinion on frame size. Having a correctly sized bike makes riding much much more enjoyable. Once you have this information, buy used. Lots of people buy high end bikes then ride them 10x, and now want them out of their house/garage. Save 50%$$$

That is a good point I hadn't thought of.

The previous trans had something come apart under load that made shifting feel like gears were being selected by a sledge hammer. The cost to swap in a factory rebuilt vs repairing the existing...almost triple.

Some have no issues, some do. My trans in my auto was a potato trans that constantly clunked gears or hesitated alot. Never had an issue with neutral to drive lag though.

Just go balls out Ted and do this.

    IMG_3553.jpg

Just imagine riding on 2 flat tires tires up a hill. That's what it was like on level ground. That trailer was only meant for wheeling the canoe from the car to the launch site.

What @Don5352 @bayareataco & @IronPeak said is sound advice. I personally hate riding on the street for recreational purposes. Grocery getting, beer runs, boat towing...I'm all in. But my head is on a constant swivel with texting drivers. I feel so much safer on a single track.

Little this. Little that 4x4 Swap’d PreRunner

Thanks gents! I figured my first step would be to get fitted.

I've had cannondales and Treks in the past, but all were impulse and weren't fitted for me, ideally. Since this is going to be my main cardio for now, I'm trying to do it 'right'.

I'll take a trip tomorrow to a miles bike or something nearby for some input. Thanks!

If they have one check out a 27/5+ they are a ''mid fat'' tire, measures out to a 29 and 3'' wide, supposed to be super fun to ride, air down super low and they do not loose traction.

My next bike is gonna be a 27.5. I like my 29er but has always felt a little clumsy.

I have never been on a trail with one , just a parking lot and that was enough to know it wasn't for me. If I was man sized it would probably feel more proportional.

Haven't done it myself, but guys I know have been professionally "fitted" by a bike shop. Specifically Robinson Wheel Works in San Leandro. The guy was a tech for many professional race teams. If the frame is right, it could just mean correcting the seat position and changing the stem. His bikes are expensive, so I only planned to pay for the professional fitting. I'm sure there are places in Sacramento with the same setup.

    More random bike pics.

Good call. Sizing a bike can't be stressed enough. It can be the difference between having a great time or the bike gathering dust. @t.hornstra ^^^ a pro fitting would be ideal , if not 2x reputable bike stores

Hey phil, i have a hard tail 26, and a full suspension 29er (cannondale rush), and for a good cardio i ride the 29. Its not a downhill bike by any means, but more of a mild trail bike. It works great for me.
