They should give a loaner and pay the note if they still haven't fixed the issue in over 30 days.

Took my truck in for service today and they told me they were going to do the recall. I saw my truck pull back into the service area and the mechanic and service advisor talking and then she got on the phone. 30 minutes later she came in to tell me that one of the bolts broke and that they were going to have to wait until the Field Rep came and looked at my truck. 30 minutes later I got a Corolla to drive until my truck gets fixed. Leaving Sunday for 30 days of Army training so if it isn't fixed by Saturday, I will be driving their loaner for 30 days. This should be interesting as to how they want to fix it and if I am willing to let that be the fix.

This is ridiculous! How difficult is it to get studs and a gasket right?

Dude! It's been so long, I was having hard time remembering everyone's name. I'm sorry, please forgive me, I love you, it will never happen again.

They broke the bolts.... this adds fuel to the fire that it wasn't a torque issue but a cheap bolt issue.

Anyone know the official bolt size; mm and length? Just wondering if you could find some Grade 8 replacements, and swap them out? Just a thought...

Looked through most of the thread. Saw some pictures of light seepage. I've yet to see a photo of a diff that looked like it was losing a significant volume of fluid. 4 quarts of fluid would make a huge mess that any owner would see. I'm calling bullshit on this being the reason that some differentials are failing. Only possibility would be if the seal blew out suddenly and it puked the fluid while driving. Is there any evidence of this?

There was a member that had a rear diff fail on a Cali freeway and I don't believe he noticed a huge plume of gear oil. I'm still wondering if they forgot to filled the diffs on some of them, or if the diffs have a flaw causing the failures. Mine is whining pretty good, but I know its full because I checked myself. Still hoping they recall the damn thing and replace it with an updated part number!

So how can we think outside the box on this issue. What could lead to the seal expanding enough to cause leakage? Is it possible for the diff to overheat enough to cause these issues? Something out of spec with the housing on the diff? I'm not car savvy but I know from reading on here that there's a lot of bright minds out there that could troubleshoot what could actually be causing this issue.

My transfer case was leaking after the first month. Cause: edge of gasket was folded over during install.

2017 OR diff, VIN not on the list but minor oil stains. Dealer said seems normal, oil level is ok:

That's what happened to mine except mine is more widespread. According to the recall, any evidence of a leak like that requires new gaskets and a re-torque if no damage. All they did for me and insisted on was a re-torque. I got the paperwork though, they can't deny anything if something locks up at this point. While highly unlikely, if they don't want to follow Toyota's guidance, that's on them.

Seems to me if all these need retorquing, the failure here is not utilizing threadlock. Mine's showing oil weepage stains too. OR's are going to be included soon I'm sure.

haha...find another dealer, others, including me with identical looking marks
are part of the recall. I'm sure the list is going to be updated before long
    to include ALL models.

I went today for 10K service and the recall, but thank you to the kind folks here at TW, I was informed.

I started asking questions about the recall before I even pulled into the service garage. Was told what has been confirmed here: no leak = re-torque....leak = holding the truck till who knows when.

I kindly stated that holding my truck was not an option as I know mine is leaking. They offered a truck as a loaner and I said thanks but I think it is better that we bag the 10,000 mile service today(I'm at 8011 anyway) as well as the recall repair. He understood and stated that there is nothing stopping me from rescheduling these services for a later time.

The dealership was very cool about the entire situation and offered to call me to schedule once Toyota figures out what they are doing to fix this. He then told me about the poor unsuspecting souls who were not as informed and are currently driving a loaner corolla's...

The Taco is not my DD so I feel better about sitting in my garage than I do on their lot...

What does your rear diff look like? Is it showing any signs of leak or seeping?

FWIW Toyota care told me the recall went from pending to remedy available this morning. The customer care person actually called my dealer with me on the phone to give then the updated info to the shop foreman. Still no ETA.

Toyota care also confirmed that the trucks that show any kind of leakage will be held.
