I will probably offend someone by posting this, but it's relevant to third gen. Don't expect for Toyota's market share to increase when the new Frontier and Ranger (and whoever else decides to join the party) begin to arrive.
Other companies are offering exciting options while the gen 3 is just a gen 2 with different makeup on and a parts bin motor.

Wait until the recall "recoil" effect hits. I think they'll see a tough hit, related to that, coming up this summer.

Resale will still be strong, but 10 years between doing nothing will change.

    Expect more innovation.

    Competition is welcomed

How about that diesel? I'll take it with a 6MT as well.

I understand Toyota's business model. Infrequent redesigns = kinks worked out = reliability = high resale but still, surely they saw all of this competition coming. They have all sorts of CAFE space to put a bigger motor in the Tacoma. I waited about 4-5 years for the gen 3 to come out and I ended up settling on my gen 2 DCLB.
I would consider the manual if it were offered with the DCLB but no to that either.

Anyone who plans on trading in their 3rd gen in the next few years might give a shit. Just sayin....
Hopefully mine is going to stay in the family for a good long time, so meh.

A revised 4.0 would have been enough for me. I tow a little Casita trailer and that bottom end is nice to get the trailer moving. Not sure I am a big fan of the gen 3 styling either. The front and bed look new but the cab looks the same as the gen. Body lines are not very cohesive.

Yes, sales are down. Global economies are dealing with a lot of anemic growth.

Get ready for a war. War = Spending.

There are some things I like about the gen 3. Interior is a home run IMO. I just feel like Toyota cut corners since they dominated the segment. When the gen 2 Tundra was released in 2007, it was ahead of it's time. 6 speed auto, variable valve timing, powerful motor etc. I don't think the gen 3 Tacoma got that same treatment.

No doubt, the incoming competition will change things for Toyota engineers moving forward, but how far away is a mid-gen refresh?

    Toyota Truck Sales Down

So are Sears and many other retailers, they're closing a bunch of stores. When TM stops investing in new plants, starts to close plants, and announce wide spread layoffs, then we'll know they've hit a new bottom.

Till then, it's just wishful thinking by its lousy competitors.

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

I really hope Toyota does not share that same attitude as they will not strive to make a better product but rest on the past.Edit: l also believe VW is the largest worldwide, a quick check said they sold 10.3 Million and Toyota 10.18 Million for 2016
