Toyota recalling 228,000 Tacoma's due to oil leaks and possible loss of control of vehicle

So weeping or seeping is NOT considered normal by Toyota.

 

So what is the remedy? New bolts nuts and gasket?

 

Not that it's a great idea to drive on a rear end that is leaking, but I'm curious as to how they "hold" vehicles.

 

Yeah, but somehow I think each dealer has their own interepretation. Mine looks no worse than 2 small Grease marks.

 

One thing I didnt ask, but I assumed that. Was told remedy was a 45 min procedure for the leaking trucks.

 

I was wondering the same thing but more about the legality of them "holding" your vehicle. The posts about bringing the spare key got me thinking about how I should approach this so it is not an issue. I never got out of the drivers seat.

There's nothing really defined now. Both Toyota care and my local Toyota dealer holds firm that I need to keep my truck there until the recall is done. When I pressed on picking my truck, they never really refused, but didn't say it was OK either. I'm gathering that if you do go back and pick up your truck, you'd be signing some lengthy waivers.

 

From a legal end, I doubt they can hold it. "Need" is the keyword there. They probably just don't want to increase the likelyhood of something happening on the road if you leave with it, but I'm no legal expert.

All this is moot if Toyota had a procedure in place for the recall. Having folks bring in their truck and give them an indefinite date on the fix is not acceptable.

Having a loaner is nice, but it's not what I bought to drive. My latest RAV4 loaner came pre-conditioned with a huge douse of salesman cologne, all along the seatbelt line too. Now I smell like i'm going to sell you something wherever I go.

 

They need to replace your vehicle with a comparable vehicle, or pay on the note until the repair is done. It's really their baby after all.

 

The 45 min is for the inspection. The new gasket and bolts is 3.5 hours. They have to pull the axles and pull the center carrier to replace them

 

45 min doesn't sound like they will be replacing the studs and gasket. Must just be tightening the nuts? I would find out exactly what they are doing.

Let us hope the recall going from pending to 'remedy available' is real, and not just smoke.

 

It is a legal, risk issue.

 

I looked my vin up and it pulled up the recall on the rear differential. I called Toyota Dealership I got my 2016 Tacoma from and talk the a service Advisor and he said he will have to look into that, because they have nothing about it. I told him that I printed out the recall and I read it to him. Which on the bottom of the recall sheet it had the Recall date Apr 27, 2017, Dealer Reference ID: H0G and the NHTSA Reference ID: has AWAITING#. Advisor said he had my number and he'd call me, which all this took place yesterday. But I do remember, on the news I heard about the recall and the news person said Toyota wasn't sending letters out until June. Also, I ask him to see if the T-SB-0077-16 Rev1 was done on my truck, he said the same thing I will have to get back with you on that, now doesn't the service department have the info that was done on the truck in their service records?

 

the procedure stated by Toyota for vehicles with in the recall are to receive the notifications in June and follow the instructions as follows in them. if your truck weeps,leaks,gear oil and its not covered under the recall, then its considered regular warranty work, either way its not legal to take private property away from legal owners against their will. whats really going on is they offer to owners the chance to leave their vehicles there and get a rent a loaner since you pre-emptively brought the truck in for a recall notice that will arrive next month, and you agreed to those terms because they have no right to seize private property, in reality you were advised to leave it not forced to that's against the law, and you agreed to leave it. also I called the Toyota corp customer service line about this and they have not given any authorization for dealers to seize peoples trucks, if your vehicle was seized they want to know who, or in reality you were offered to leave your truck and use the loaner that was provided, otherwise you can take the truck home until June.

 

A lot of your statements are inaccurate.

- The recall is in effect. Look up your vin here: https://vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/ - the recall will pop up.
- I didn't know about the recall until the dealer told me about it when I went in for an oil change. It popped up on their computer when they typed in my VIN. I didn't 'pre-emptively' bring in my truck for a recall--that would not make any sense.
- Toyota is holding any truck within the recall range for the fix (which is pending) Confirmed this with my dealer and Toyota Care.
- The legality of the hold is debatable. Of course if I go in and demand my truck back, i'm sure I can get it back after signing a few waivers, but is it worth it for the liability?
