yeah but his broke off in the hub. So he couldn't just unlock them and drive away either. That is what he is saying. He still had to replace it.

And this is why I will be taking my cut CV to moab with me. AKA my peg leg kit.

Understand eactly what he is saying, at that point its SOL... but he was also asking about going back to an ADD setup which honestly is not a better fix going forward.

So, THAT'S why my elocker wasn't working.... The orings hardened to the point where they were as hard as the aluminum housing.

i think it is. THe CVs are stronger.

Yes, you are right about the bearings and if the diff explodes. This has happened to me as well. Not fun to deal with. But i'll still take the strong CVs. I don't get why people like the manual hub thing really. But i live in a winter area where they freeze unlocked or locked when you don't want them too and you really don't save on gas milage with them. IDK. Just me.

@Reh5108 Do you have a pic of what exactly broke on the hub? Few pieces should be interchangable with the 86-95 years.

And did you ever get that guy with the elocker to unlock for you?

Never had a hub freeze. Shouldn't happen if you take care of them, there should be nothing inside to freeze, just a dab of grease. I wonder how the CV is different though. Doesn't make sense that anything would change, that would just require more manufacturing. Pretty sure it's just another TW myth being perpetuated because a couple manual hub guys went hard and snapped some axles. I remember @Slodgetto was even running 37" tires on them.

Lol Silas blew 9 cv axles that I know of. He went through 3 the first year at moab alone on 35s.

They are smaller spline count and are physically smaller diameter axles. Not much. But apparently enough.

Was pretty well talked about on TTORA.

And my email brake freezes all the time so I just never use it in the winter. Same thing happened to the hib..when I had a truck with manual hubs. Does it not get that cold there?

Maybe bringing 2 spares to RT will not be enough. :p

-15 was the low this year. Been down to -20 once. No freezing here, again nothing to freeze. They're well sealed, no water or other liquids to freeze. Only lightly greased. Which spline count is lesser btw? Can't be the inner one, the outer one seats into a locking cog that has far fewer splines than most things on the truck if that's what you're talking about. Is it the shaft that's lesser diameter or the outer cage, inner tulip is identical to ADD.

I plan on rebuilding it tonight with the passenger side that i still haven't gotten around to installing. So i cam get pictures then. The inside of the knob broke so there was no pulling pressure to unlock the cog that slides out. Also one of the c clips was pretty mangles and a brass bushing deformed.

Honestly I don't have an issue with breaking cvs. They are $50 a piece at the local yota yard and id rather have that be my weak link. I think i could do another swap in an hour or so on the trail if i had to do it again.

When i did break an ADD cv in the past i cut the boots and was able to remove the shaft. It was a mess but i didn't have to mess with pulling everything apart amd the hub end was still there holdimg the bearing.

@ToyRyd04 no we didnt get @alee elocker working. Pulled it all apart and it was clean enough to eat off of barring the grease. I think it's an electrical issue. His floors were pretty wet so we think water came through his tub job somewhere.

Question for you guys w/ADD - I can't find a good write up on replacing the front wheel bearings. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
I know it's easiest to remove the spindle and taking it to a shop that has a press. Is it that simple? Are there seals that I should remove before hand? Should I replace the seals? I want to do as much of the "prep" work as I can cause I know a shop isn't going to take care of not damaging anything when they press the bearings. Thanks guys

Find a shop with an OTC Hub tamer and they can do it on the truck without you removing anything more than the brake and rotor. Common tool and much smarter than going ham with a press and some fiddly shims to keep everything straight.
