is $335 a good price for dealer to install a timing belt kit?

its a 4runner with 4.7 v8 and im supplying all the parts so its just the labor charge, dealer said it would be $335 to do it.

is that a fair price? I think it sounds reasonable for how much work is involved, but I wanted to check with you guys on that.

I am not in good health to do it myself and for the peace of mind, as well as the warranty, I would rather have a Toyota dealer do it, rather then just finding some shop to do it trying to save a couple of dollars.

I want to be sure im being charged reasonably for the work

    Sounds fair.

    Whats the parts list?

They'll accept using your parts? Seems unusual.

    Hope you get feeling better!

thanks guys, wasn't sure just how long it would take to do it but I was "assuming" it was a several hour job so I was thinking it was a good price too, but I just wanted to hear some confirmation on it

its the oem kit from aircabinman so its all oem Toyota parts and that is why they are ok with it

as to feeling better I have permanent back issues so no more crawling under the hood for me, replace battery or alternator and maint tune ups is about the best I can manage

That seems fair to me. Actually seems like a very good price for quality work.

Throw your specs and repairs in at repairpal.com to get an idea of price range. You can separate the parts from labor as well on that site. Usually where I get an idea for quotes for folks.

what are you guys thoughts on the front engine seals being replaced?

I hadn't thought those would be needed but new parts are never a "bad" idea

are the seals easy to replace or add extra work to the job? they may not be including replacing these in the estimate

I did a series of simultaneous maintenance at 90,000 miles (t-belt, waterpump/thermostat, transmission flush, etc), but IIRC the t-belt (parts and labor) was around $500ish. Granted, it's a Tacoma with a 3.4 and not a 4Runner with a 4.7, but still, if they do good work $350 seems like a solid price. Was going to do the camshaft seals at the same time, but they said they looked great and probably wouldn't need changing until the next t-belt change in 100,000 miles.

I always replace cam/crank seals on things, even if they are not wet around them. Mostly because if I'm doing a 90k service I don't want to go back in for another 90k.

Anything I touch going in and out (and maybe a few surrounding items) get refreshed at the same time.

Cost more? Yes. But if the vehicle is a keeper, at least I know it's fully refreshed.

I guess what I am asking is does replacing those seal involve much more work or does it only take an extra 5-10 minutes to do them?

im in favor or replacing, just wondering if doing it adds another hour labor to the price

EDIT - ok I found out on the 4.7 v8 the cams have to be removed to change the seals so that 7 hours additional labor so that's definitely out unless they are found to be leaking

    that's a reasonable price.
I had my mechanic do the same on my 3.4 4runner.

He charged me $350 for just labor

I think the work involved is pretty much identical between the two

just wondering, is it a good idea to have them flush and replace the tranny filter and fluid while im at it?

the truck still looks new inside and out so I am wanting to go another 150k miles needing nothing and having no issues with it

You'll have to ask the shop how they bill those. Seems to me since they are already exposed that it should just be actual time, not flat rate time.

It takes a little more than 10 minutes, but not much with the right tool and experience. And of course if it's already damp around the area they need replacing anyway.

I'm the same way, especially with long-term vehicles like mine, but despite my asking they said they typically change them out every-other 90k service, and (how un-dealership like) weren't eager to charge me money to do it.

And well, ya gotta dive in and do another t-belt in 90k regardless? :notsure: If something is good for 200k miles, but you change it every 100k miles, wouldn't that just be extra time and cost for no tangible benefit? At some point, being that "thorough" becomes a law of diminishing returns.

Agree conceptually. Except the seals are cheap and I'm the labor. :D

If everything was nice and dry and I intended to sell in say 30-40k, I'd probably let them slide.
