I'm somewhat interested in how some of you broke-in your new truck and how it might pertain to people's gas mileage and possibly reliability. The reason I ask is I started selling cars in the early 80's (Datsuns) and I worked with a guy who drove the piss out of his new demos. Everywhere he went it was to the floor. It didn't matter if the car 2 miles or 200 miles they were broken in as hard as you can possibly imagine.
Strange as it might seem, I sold a few of his demos and every one of them got great gas mileage and never used oil which was quite remarkable in the 80's.
I know when it comes to motorcycles, especially sport bike riders, some claim you should break them in hard or like you stole it.
I know nowadays most manufacturers don't have any specific guidelines about break-in like they used to but I'd like to see how some of you feel about it.

    Stock and staying that way
I drove it easy, changed the oil at 3,981 miles, and drove it.

If I had it to do over, I'd change at 1,500 miles, then let the 10k change intervals catch the rest.

Break in periods are over, rings dont need to seat, cylinders are machined to much better tollerances etc..

I drove the snot out of mine and took it straight to the trails.

I've always drive my new cars the same as I would normally drive, which is fairly aggressive. I went from a camaro to this, so not AS aggressive. I'll have them change the oil at the 10k service, unless it smells or looks funny before that.

I didn't really think about it but I'd bet the manual has some guidance.

I have read on here a few times of members getting better mpg after the truck is broke in. Has anyone noticed that and what mileage is considered " broken in"?

This, you don't have to bag on them at the start anymore, but it's still fun and worth it!

At around 8k I noticed much better mpg. I started at around 19mpg when new, then 20.3, now 21.5 and at 10k.

If you look in the owners manual pg 158 it will tell you a few things during the engine break in. For the first 200 mi avoid sudden stops. First 500 miles DO NOT Tow a trailer. First 1k mi Dont drive at extreme speeds, dont drive continuously in low gears and dont drive at constant speeds for extended periods.

I still believe in a break in oil change. I did it at around 1200 mi right before taking my first road trip in the car. While it wasnt much there was metal flakes in the oil that I was happy to remove from the truck. Now I stick to the 10k intervals.
