Had a good friend get killed when a farm tractor fell onhim about 20 years ago. He was using a cheap knock off hi lift jack. With np warming what so ever, it jist dropped. His 5 year old son witnessed it happen. Skip the junk.

All very valid questions. It would be hard to get it under the back axle or the like if the truck was sunk in mud as well.

I didn't say the hilift was useless or that it didn't have good uses

But it's proven to be a dangerous piece of kit to use quite often and like I said a lot of guys more experienced than any of us are swapping out to the bottle jacks. Ronny Dahl specifically picked a bottle jack used for lifting semis so I'm sure it has the strength and height to lift a good ways

    Why not both :p

But on my list of parts to buy
I'll get the bottle jack first and then a hilift

Especially since all our trucks are more daily drivers than dedicated trail rigs.

So I'd rather have the bottle jack first that is both useful on the side of the road and on the trail :)

Personally though I still like that fancy inflatable lift

Keep in mind this is the same kind they use to lift up trophy trucks in the middle of the desert on the Baja 1000

Definitely going. I even have a rare Sunday off that weekend!

I thought Matt was on the short list too.

For those who've never been there, Badlands has a fairly well stocked "gift shop". Lots of tee shirts, sweat shirts, hats, etc...as well as some accessories.

Bring cash or credit card. I wear 2xl tee's.

Yes and no....Trails are easier, but some of it is tighter...There are a few trails that have a high degree of difficulty, but they are "optional".It is far smaller than Harlan, more of a playground than a huge trail system. The group usually breaks into 2 or 3 smaller groups. There will be anything from full blown trail rigs to Range Rovers and Subaru's. Some will stay on the milder trails. Some will just go crashing through the woods where there really isn't a trail. I stay somewhere in the middle. There will be a few full size pick ups (even long beds) Where they can go, you can take a Tacoma with your eyes closed. (I've been accused of doing just that) It has an assortment of dirt, mud, sand, rocks, hills, flats, and dunes (YES, sand dunes!)

It's not some place I'd go 10 times a year, but it IS a good time. There will be a group (Midwest Overlanders) there too, that is mostly Central and Northern Indiana and Illinois off roaders. They are a fun group to be around. Very diverse group. (Both individuals AND vehicles)
