I apologize in advance if this has been covered before, but has anyone tried installing a 2nd gen cap on a 3rd gen? I'm assuming as long as the length is the correct size it should fit with no problem, but it seems to me like the 3rd gen bed is thicker than the 2nd gen and that might cause issues.

Also if I buy a cap without the roof rack and rails am I able to have a dealer install them later?

How are these shells holding up during offroading/bumpy trails etc? I wouldn't want to drop $$ and have one crack the first time taking it out?

I need to look up the exact model but its a century shell. I haven't taken it wheeling yet id have to get back to you on that one. I looked at a few different companys and found this one fit the best. All the other ones sat really close to the sticker and only looked good without the trd sticker but I did not want to take mines off.

Been on plenty of trail with mine (Leer 100XR), both high and low speed, no cracks at all but I do have a good chunk of gelcoat missing (~1" x 2") near the back window and no idea how it got damaged. Most likely some inattentive person in a parking lot, but who knows. Also, did have the whole thing shift back about 3 inches once and only noticed after three days and hundreds of miles of off road through Death Valley and Mojave. Moved it back, tightened it up, and hasn't been a problem in the year since.

I thought I'd share after all the help I got from this thread. I got the Leer 100rcc with the outdoorsman windoors on both sides, flip down sliding window, rug interior, led strip with switch, outlets, and fishing rod holder. It's pretty sweet! I was going to go with ARE, but I needed something that could hold more than the 200 dynamic weight limit. The ARE commercial ones have aluminum reinforcements inside, but prevent you from getting the fold window in front. Which I couldn't go without with my OCD to keep it clean. Leer's commercial ones are 500 pounds dynamic weight limit by just reinforcing the fiberglass making it look like a regular leer top and I get my fold down window. The guys at Tom's camperland in Phoenix were great. Out the door it came out to 2600 bucks. Great deal with all the bells and whistles while being able to hold A LOT more weight on top. ARE commercial one would've been in the 3100 ball park.

Good to hear. Are you having any issues with leaks like water and sand getting in or is yours sealed pretty well

The walls of the bed are taller in the 3rd gen, so the cap would not be flush with the top of the cab, it would be taller.

    thank you!

Do you know if a cap dealer would be able to install rails and racks on a cap if it didn't already come with it? I found a Leer cap I would like to get but it does not have the rails and I'm not sure if that's something that can be purchased and installed without a problem.

Also, the tailgate profile is different so the rear window of a 2nd gen cap won't close on a 3rd gen truck without modification.

No sand, yes to silt/dust mostly through the unsealed tailgate and water leakage is very minor at the front corners of the bed. Nothing I'm too worried about.

Here is the inside. It is very thick in certain areas. The fishing rod holder is nice and the LED bar is bright.

They can install them afterwards. It is more expensive than getting it from LEER. I bet you're going to get a hell of a deal so it shouldn't matter.
