Then throwing in a rear awning(ideally a foxwing) makes cooking no matter the weather so much easier.

 

Yeah, man I have been shopping for an awning for a couple of months and was seriously considering the foxwing but the reviews on it aren't all that great and the coverage is a bit short on length away from the truck. I tend to over think most things and at this point I am back to the ARB Awning. I'm not a huge fan of the massive footprint when not setup, especially because I would like it for the back of the truck, which just won't work. So it will have to go on on e side. But the damn thing is long and I have an access cab. I love the idea of the foxwing covering two sides and and a relatively small footprint when stowed away. Decisions, decisions.

 

I'm currently thinking about going the DIY way.

Not sure what I'll end up with in the end but I want good tailgate coverage as well as at least partial side coverage so I can leave a side window open when sleeping when it's raining.

 

All these drawer systems you guys are building have got me itching to build something.

 

Yep, another reason for two sides covered that I hadn't thought of. Keep us posted if you go the DIY route. If I thought I could come up with something that would be half decent, I would, but I don't know that an awning is a good DIY project for me. Someone else a little more talented...I'm sure no problem.

TIG welder is out of commission right now. As soon as it is back from repairs I believe I may start on something. I have a bed rack not a topper so if I build something it will be aluminum.

I am not a carpenter of any fashion.

 

Love both of these setups, I am starting to plan out one for my truck for winter camping at ski resorts. Did you guys use any plans for the slide out storage? I feel like that will be the hardest part about making one of these.

Also, this shows me that I will want a high top shell.

 

definitely get the high top if you plan on sleeping in there. I wish I had... its not unbearable, but its definitely more comfy.

youll definitely appreciate the extra room. im used to sleeping in tight quarters so it wasn't too much of an inconvenience for me, but the woman is still struggling to get used to it 2 years later lol. the dog doesn't seem to care haha

 

Yeah this past winter I made a bed in my GTI haha. I slept in that comfortably and warm for the big snow storms vermont got! There wasnt enough room for anyone else though.

 

we don't use a thick mattress so its still more headroom than a couple of set ups in here.

 

Nice! The dog has plenty of head room! You sleep in that in the winter?

 

No plans really. I researched online and ended up blending a couple of different designs to fit my needs. A high top shell is nice, I don't have anything to compare it to, since I've never owned a regular height shell, but I will say it's pretty roomy in there with the extra 6" and the windoors make accessing the interior easy. I can't imagine not having either the extra height or the windoors. Well worth the extra money!

 

yup. damn windows have so much ice on them from our breath freezing on them haha. winter is the only time we go camping. we don't like people when we're trying to enjoy nature.

 

Any chance you documented your build? I know I can build a box for storage lol, its just getting the sliders right that scares me.

Is there room for you guys to sit up or no? Just curious if you could get dressed for skiing in there comfortably or just hang out in it after skiing.

 

we cant sit upright, but we can lean up a little to read or something like that. I imagine getting dressed in there for skiing would be a chore. but to get my pants and shirt on and off isn't too difficult. although normally I just get dressed outside the truck and then take the dog for a walk to warm back up. ive never seen the woman struggle to get into or out of clothes in there.

 

I can sit up an prop my back against the back window and read, but it is not tall enough for me to sit up "Indian Style". If I am on my hands and knees, I have a few inches of clearance, if that gives you any idea.

 

Here are a couple of quick pictures from a camping trip a buddy and I did in NH a few weeks ago. We had a great time exploring class 6 roads! My tent cot turned into RTT worked great!
