Ya that's true. Might as well. But I've also seen thieves just unscrew the Allen bolts on side that hold it to bracket

They make security hardware too that requires a special Allen key with a hole in the middle. Pricey hardware, but keeps low level shitheads away.

I changed the oil in my truck today. I do not know if it was the toyota dealer that put it on so tight or what, but I had such a pain getting the filter housing open. I bought the right wrench and I legit broke it. I went bought an other in town with my car. I still could not get it loose. I wound up getting the ratchet just right and had to push with both legs. I am not a weak ass so no idea why I could not break it loose with two hands pulling all I could. Just my luck though shit always goes wrong when I want to wrench some thing. Got the fresh oil in no leaks so I put the skid plate back on good to go. Finshed it up with a nice bath. Been using this rinseless soap, shit is good. I only you one gallon of water for my whole truck.

Hopefully this is the right thread for this!

I'm driving from salt lake to San Jose this weekend and figured I'd split the trip somewhere and camp.

I'll be taking hwy 50 to Tahoe and then to San Jose. Any good places along hwy 50 to camp? I'm hoping not much more than six hours from salt lake.

If you're taking 50, stay somewhere in the Humboldt National Forest. So many cool places!

hahaha dammm. I broke the wrench piece because I was using a breaker bar on it. Kinda felt silly using a breaker bar on a oil filter though. Next oil change if it very tight at least I know it gets super tight. As for now I am just blaming it on the dealer.

6 hours from Salt Lake puts your around Austin NV.

There is a actual FS camp ground 10 miles from town on the SLC side, Bob Scott campground.

You can take the Hwy 50 alternate route which is just outside Austin on the Reno side. Its a short scenicish detour that will take you through Reese River Valley and then up and over a small range of mtns. Theres quite a few makeshift campsites off that road once you get to the mtns. It doesnt really take much more time than going 50 across and its kind of a neat drive but I used to live in Eureka and have driven 50 a million times so...

Theres also some cool stuff not long after you turn off of hwy 50 into Big Smokey Valley if you take a short drive, about 15 miles south on 376, out of your way its worth checking out Kingston Canyon and the town of Kingston and you can also camp there, it's a real cool place.

About 7 miles from hwy 50/376 on the opposite side of the hwy is another favorite location of mine. Thats all Ill say. :anonymous:

Beyond that, I mean pick a direction from the highway and go.

Might also be helpful to know you can get fuel and food and such in Eureka, pony express deli is realllllly good, and fuel and food in Austin, I like the International, and you can find a bar and store in Kingston and also Eastgate and also Cold Springs Station.

Finally made it down into Dog Valley last monday.

My only "recovery" equipment right now is a shovel...which I didn't even have with me. So once I hit some decent snow I decide to turn around.

Was close but didn't even make it to the campuground right below Crystal Peak
    Crysital peak.jpg

Henness Pass Road is not passable yet either. Wasn't even close to getting to the split to go up to Verdi Peak

    Hwy dog valley.jpg

Lastly, I was so close to the top of Peavine last night. I say give it another week (Unk how much snow we are going to get this weekend........) and you should be able to make it to the radio towers no problem

    Peavine.jpg

I've got about two weeks until I finish my masters at UNR. Once that is done, I'm ok with heading up a day trip with everyone on here. I have only explored Peavine, dog valley and some of Boca and Stampede. I am open to explore anywhere else (hopefully less snow)

Thanks! I'll have some reading to do. You're making me want to rush less now. Haha

I'll be making this drive 4-5 times over the next couple months so I'll get to try a few places.

Great Basin is right on the border of Utah and Nevada on highway 50 as well. Just another option. Stayed there a couple times.

Anyone been on the detour around Stampede dam closure yet? I'm thinking about heading out tomorrow afternoon to check it out but curious how much snow there is still.

Theres a fun road you could camp off of if you take the hwy down big smokey valley and then take an immediate right FS road 43003 and that will take you up and over to Austin Summit. Its quick side trip that doesnt take you too far out of the way.

Theres seriously endless endless canyons to check out but everywhere is really remote so go prepared and let someone know youre exact route. And have good maps, a lot of rds are only signed with numbers, if at all.
