...forgive this newb but when you say kit what exactly is in the " kit".......is it just replace gasket and re-torque ( with new fluid of course) or is this a new rear swap out?

...if they fix it free and give you a loaner then I am ok with this personally.......sux, but better than the alternatives.

It sounds like they are going to replace all the studs and nuts plus the gasket. I guess they are not the correct strength studs?

Called my dealer, got it in next week. Inspected myself and no seaping or leaks. But it was confirmed by them that if there is any leaking the vehicle would be grounded , and I would get myself a corolla or alike until the repair was completed .

My truck is paid in full. My name is the only name on the title. Here is my timeline of events.

    - Took my truck in last Friday for the 20K service (oil change) The recall popped up on their computer as they were signing me in. Asked if I wanted the recall done, I said sure. The service advisor says he has never seen the recall, and was very nonchalant about it. I've never noticed any leaking from my diff, so I assumed they will just check the bolts, and torque to spec.

    - Friday evening rolls around, and I get a call from the same service advisor. He says I need to pickup a loaner, as the tech found 2 weep spots on my rear diff, and they will need to call Toyota for an answer. I was confused since I thought the recall notice already had a 'fix' procedure outlined? He could not answer that.

    - Monday, and no calls. I called them in the afternoon and still no answer for a fix. I asked if I can get my truck back since I am in the process of selling it, and the temp service advisor says come pick it up, but sign a waiver saying that the recall was not done and if anything happens, it's on me. I tried several dealers to trade-in the truck (including the dealer where the truck is held at), but non would touch it because of the pending recall. They all said, get the recall done and we'll buy it. Part of the reason is that they would call the service department and ask for an ETA for the fix - which there is none. I bring my truck back to the original dealer to wait for the fix, and they put me in a loaner for 30 days. No joke.

    - Tuesday, I call them for an update, and they said it was a BIG mistake letting me get the truck out, and that I can no longer pick up my truck. The temp service advisor on Monday didn't know the severity of the issue. Still no fix available.

    - Wednesday, I call Toyota corporate and asked why there isn't a fix for this recall. The rep calls my dealer, and Toyota corporate themselves says to me that I cannot pick up my truck until the fix is completed. She did mention that their internal recall document shows a remedy available, and that info will be relayed to the dealer.

    - Thursday (today) I get a call from the Service Dept. Manager at 7am. He says, no your truck needs to stay here until the recall is done. So far, no ETA. Basically no new info, but reiterated, that the truck needs to stay.

Now legally, i'm pretty sure I can go get my truck if I kicked and screamed loud enough, but I don't want to do that. I just want the fix done so I can sell the truck. The whole recall with no ETA on fix is what really bugs me.

Have you had any dealers at least ballpark you on trade in value? Any reason you don't sell it private sell instead of dealer trade-in?

Dealer offered me 30k, which was fine. Every thing was agreed upon right up til they pulled the Vin and said there was a pending recall on the truck that was not completed. They said normally this wouldnt be an issue, but they called several service departments and all said no ETA for the fix. Didn't want the hassle of selling private party.

Just checked my rear diff. slight seeping. VIN not on recall list. I contacted Toyota Corporate customer service, they said contact dealer and schedule it for warranty service. Appointment scheduled for next week. I wonder if they will do the repair without holding onto my truck since it's a "warranty" repair and not part of the recall (yet)?

Just curious...I'm starting to seriously consider trading in for 4R when 3yr warranty is up. I don't want to start paying $$ out of pocket to get the kinks worked out of this thing.

From what I know the recall so far is only on the sport/sr5 models. You are in a good position as the ORs are not on the list, so you don't have to jump through the recall hoops. Just your regular warranty work.

Had my 2017 SR5 in for the recall today. No evidence of leak, torque redone. In and out in 45 minutes. Awesome!

Thanks. That's what I'm hoping. Appointment is 5/11. I'll report back with the outcome.

If the integrity of the bolts/nuts are indeed the issue, I'm surprised
some are just getting them torqued and then on their way.

That's funny as I traded in a BMW with an active airbag recall on the Tacoma. I was worried not being able to trade it it as BMWNA wouldn't have parts until later this year for my region. I called the Toyota dealer, says that okay, it happens all the time. He said the Toyota Sienna has a recall for the sliding door and there is no fix for it, he used that as an example. Dealer also sold the BMW off the lot in less than a week.

This was just 2 months ago.

Perhaps none of those recalls were stop sales recalls like this one.

I knew I had to hang onto my truck for more than a few years. That's why, when all these issues started cropping up on mine I raised holy hell with corporate (in a firm but cordial and persistent manner of course)...ended up with 8 year 125K platinum warranty. I'll be dumping it before that's up!!
