I too have this problem and have a 2011. I was looking into aftermarket headlight assemblies and was wondering if anyone knows of this would still be a problem with most aftermarket setups. I was hoping to find an aftermarket set up without day time running lights. Is that a possibility to eliminate the daytime running lights and only have turn signals or would additional steps need to be taken other than simply buying an aftermarket headlight assembly?

I dont think tacos had the ability to turn them off until 2012.. could be wrong, but in my 09 i cant turn them off, while in my 13 theres an option on the stalk to turn them off completely and only have blinkers.

Edited to add: not entirely sure of the year it changed, but i too suffered from the melting drls in my 09.. luckily i got the tsb done in time

Does anyone know if you can simply turn them off on a 2011 or not?

If not, is it possible to buy aftermarket headlights that only have turn signals and not day time running lights?

I am in the market for some smoked lens aftermarkets possibly HIDs and don't want melting issue or DTR all together.

    Thanks,

    Andy

You need to 'undo' the factory relay mod hardware in the 2011. There is no simple switch or Toyota techstream setting to turn off the DTRLs.

My 2011 fell victim as well, but I was able to get them replaced with the TSB on hand as a backup. $900 work order at zero cost to me.

Even though this is cosmetic, its still a latent defect which should have been caught by Toyota's midlevel engineers and shouldn't have been allowed through their design review process. The TSB time length (which is now expired) should be lifetime.

Good to know. I just messaged a local dealer to see if mine can be replaced even though I'm way past warranty. Both sides are toast. I'll keep you guys posted.

Is it possible to purchase a different type of bulb that will give off less heat that will still fit in original socket?
I have also seen someone who opened up their headlights and removed the damaged plastic lenses and just resealed the headlights.

LEDs. Just make sure you get CK bulbs for the front. And don't buy Sylvania LEDs from your local auto parts store.

Awesome thabks! I’m waiting for new headlights in the mail, I’ll more than likely be picking some LED’s to avoid the this problem again.

Call toyota. Get a claim number. Complain nicely. They will offer you "assistance" in replacing. I bought mine online, oem from online parts store of a toyota dealership, smoked version, for $425-ish. Shop around to find the best deal. Toyota "assistance" is a $$ rebate for supplying the invoice. Won't say how much, but it was enough to make it worth buying oem quality.

Btw, I was at 6+ years and 76000 miles, so like you was past the warranty extension.

They replaced mine once already. Now the damn things are melting again. Guess someone picked the wrong TSB headlights up off the shelf and gave me the the regular one's like I had. I just find it comical now to walk in all the time and ask if they are going to fix their mistake or not.

Somewhere on here there is a thread where a TW member had the headlights replaced and later they melted. With part numbers, he was able to prove that they didn't put in the glass TSB headlights. He got them replaced even though the time was up.

Mine started melting several years ago. The inside lens has broken but lights still work. Bought some China-made replacements from Amazon for $75/pair. I applied silicon sealant on top and the sides as some have complained of aftermarket lens leaking. My truck is parked outside and faces the sun in the am. The lens are cracked and UV tortured. I buffed the lens once, but they are too cracked to do that anymore. Will be installing the aftermarkets within the next two weeks.

Toyota replaced my whole front light units even after I had them replaced with non factory lights when I had an accident.

i bought the diode dynamics flasher relay to delete my dtrls, you need the blocker too which is like 5 bucks at toyota.

nice features in programmable tap to signal, hazards, and others.
