On the 4.7L in the 4Runner, I'm seeing 450-600 bucks on labor for the full timing belt/water pump kit.

Jesus that's steep! You sure that's not a Maserati dealership or something? It took ME 8 hours (over 2.5 days) to do my T-belt and pump, and I'm just some idiot shade-tree mechanic.

FWIW, my corner mechanic (who I trust) quoted me around $800 for my T-belt and pump. I decided to do it myself. $250 for the parts (from same ebay vendor above for my 3.4L). Totally worth it.

well they are changing the price on me now lol.

just dropped it off and the guy says that $350 was just the price to replace just the timing belt and nothing else.

it would definitely be extra labor for replacing the rollers and tensioner and the front seals can be very pricey to replace :( so he will have them look into what is involved in doing them and give me a quote on replacing the seals.

I have a feeling I may have to argue over the extra labor charges if they want to straight up charge book estimates for each item since the engine will already be stripped down to do the timing belt and book labor estimates for repairs figure in stripping down the engine and putting it all back together as part of the chart estimates. im not going to pay strip down time charges for extra work on an already stripped down engine.

the tranny he says has no filter, its just a screen built into the casing so all they do is drain and refill the tranny fluid for its 100k service and that costs $216, which sounds steep, but I rather have them do it all at once and be done with, rather then me trying to do it in my driveway to save $100 doing it myself

well not cheap for sure but with synthetic tranny fluid at $10-$12 a quart I wouldn't say its highway robbery. also on the 4runners, the exhaust needs to be removed just to make enough room to be able to drop the pan

plus there is no dip stick like with our tacos, on these you must refill it from underneath the truck using a measuring stick to check fluid level so....

that's 1 hour labor at $100 and $116 for fluid and new pan gasket.

I could live with that, it looks like its a big job

I have a feeling that $350 will jump up to around $500 to replace everything, and I would still be ok with that, at least I hope it doesn't go over that.

I was stoked to think it only would cost $350 but if I can get it done for under $750 im happy

Been a while, but I 'believe' Toyota claims that on that tranny, the fluid is a 'lifetime' fluid. Hence no dipstick or drain plug. Not saying you shouldn't have them do the fluid swap. Just saying is all.

worth looking into for sure, the service guy said it should be done every 100k but then they don't always know as much as the pretend to know.

if it is lifetime I will just have them check it and top off if needed, no sense doing it if its not a service requirement

I could be wrong too. Owner's manual should be accurate. Stealerships can be tough to trust.

ok just heard back from them and this is the breakdown:

the price to replace timing belt with tensioner and rollers $335
water pump replacement while doing timing belt kit is an extra $150 (normally $250 by itself)
price to cut and reprogram 2 new chipped keys while getting all the other work done is $100 (normally $120 by itself)

total cost to do everything except replace the seals is $585 for everything

I told him forget about doing the tranny because he said they were only going to do a simple flush and replace fluid for $269 any way (not the $216 the first guy quoted) and $169 of that was the cost of the fluid at almost $20 a quart. they weren't even going to drop the pan to clean it out or replace the filter on it. the way he described they were going to pull the hoses to the tranny cooler to drain and replace the fluid I can do that myself if that's all they do. I did my taco this way but I had a dip stick to check and add fluid with the taco

he said replacing the cam shaft seals means the cams have to come off (7 hour job minimum just for that) so unless they are leaking I told him to just forget about doing those unless they are leaking

EDIT - they just called and my seals look fine and don't need replacing, but the serpentine belt tensioner is bad so that's another extra $100, sure I can buy an oem one from ebay for $50 or an oem brand part for $35, but im in no spot to not just have them do it while its in pieces and no time to get one mailed to me by tomorrow :notsure:.

at least now I know what that squeak I heard the other day on startup was, figured it had to be the belt or the tensioner lol

well tranny fluid and filter is "supposed to be" lifetime never need replacing but if you are smart you do it at 100k miles as you would with any vehicle

the timing belt is also a 100k mile maint item to replace but this one "has to be done" or engine damage can and will at some point most certainly occur if you don't do it. the v8's are "interference engines, wich means if timing bely goes the valves can hit the pistons and use you imagination as to what that can cost, it can be as simple as just bending a valve to needing new heads and pistons, to a ruined engine.

ya, the v6 is cheaper then the v8 and the seals are easy to change out on the v6. the v8 seals cant be removed without removing the cams plus all the parts are higher cost and slightly larger. luckily my seals look fine so they don't need replacing :bananadance:

not your fault im in the wrong forum lol, just nobody replies to posts at the 4runner forums, they aren't as many people there as here in the taco forum

once I sell my 04 taco I am going to miss not being able to talk about stuff and get speedy replies to questions about my vehicle

Pshhh, I could sell the Taco and buy a Studebacker, and I'd still be on here. If anything, just to post (in)appropriate memes and tell people to use the search.

    It's a win-win.

I can't see how come the cams would have to come out. Dust shield or something covering them, sure but I've never seen a Toyo. engine that had to have cams come out to do seals.
