Had a slight issue with the ol' girl recently.

Then 2 weeks ago this happened, sorry for the bad angle but it's the only picture I have of the new one clean.

On the bright side this one's not an automatic.

Missing the color match bumpers, fender flares, grill, and door handles though.

Yeah it was definitely a clean truck, it's a shame I didn't save the suspension, wheels, tires and headlights from it before I sold it.

Thanks man, made it out mostly without a scratch. Only issue is I was slightly crooked as in one shoulder hung way lower than the other, the ER doctor was quite surprised I didn't feel any pain from that but it fixed itself in a week or so. But yeah I'm loving the 5 speed.

What would you say is a good price for a set of used cvs to rebuild for spares. Owner claims the inner boots being torn is the only issue.

    $150/pair fair?

Looks like they made a uniball adapter for LR UCAs and called them their own??

I paid 60 bucks for a pair of great shape OEM CVs from a pick n pull.

Pretty sure they still use a normal balljoint like their second gen Ucas.

I saw a post on Facebook and they're selling them for like 480ish I think.

It is a ADD axle. Just comparing the two. The main shaft diameters are the same. It's the hub end that differs. There seemed to be some confusion about the main axle being different but it's the same.

From looking at the two side by side I can understand if the weak part of the axle is the hub end instead of the cage on a manual cv. I'll give it another go and if the next breakage blows the hub up I'll probably go back to ADD and just deal with my driveshaft spinning all the time.

I'm glad you posted those pics.
From the pic you posted in another thread of the rock situation that caused the breakage, it wouldn't have mattered if it had been manual or ADD. That particular situation with the entire weight of the truck on a single tire, and the steering tire at that, plus the attempt at reverse... would have broke a Dana 44 exactly the same way.
It's very common for a front stub shaft to break when torque is applied in reverse in that very situation, front axle assemblies are just not as stout as the rear.

Id be curious what it looks like under the outer boot. I swear the manual CVs i have seen taper a bit.

But i went back a looked at the photo after posting my last replay and saw the nut lol

But big spline count difference for sure on the manuals vs ADD as you can see!

FROR supposedly had a 35 spline kit for the IFS. I'm not sure if it fits the 1st gens.
I've seen their 4runner all over town though, thing looks totally badass. Might be something to look into.

35 spline axles will handle 37" tires with no trouble. I've tried like hell to break my custom Dana 60. I've shattered the 30 spline Dana 44 several times though. However, it was just fine on 35's. The addition of 37's toasted it time and time again.

I just checked a spare 44 stub shaft, it's diameter at the stub is only 28.05mm, so actually similar to the manual stub you broke.

Edited that last bit, I thought your pic showed a slightly larger diameter.

Any reason reverse is different than going forward?
