Tried to start engine with it already started.

Ok so tonight i was sitting in a parking lot waiting on my friend cause he got pulled over and i had turned my headlights off and so i see him go by. I had forgot my truck was already started and i turned the key and the truck went off. So i started it back up and everything seemed good.

Does anyone know if i could have messed anything up?? Im just checking cause i dont want to mess up my truck.

 

my sister did it in my dads surbaban like 10 years ago, its been fine ever since, it just made a bad noise when she did it.

 

its the starter gear against the flywheel. don't make a habit of that. you should be fine.

 

Ok thanks guys. When i did it i was really surprised that it went off. Like it cut the motor off. I have done it on a mower before and it makes the most aweful noise.

 

yeah many people do this specially in cars that don't make that much noise. Yeah your flywheel was spinning since your truck was on and once u turned your key to the on position the starter gear teeth rubbed against the spinning teeth of the flywheel. You'll be fine, the only thing that will cause some damage is if you would hold it for a long time then you'd damage ur starter or flywheel.

 

Why the Ford hatin' dude? I've put 181000 on my F250 without a problem. I haven't had a Toyota long enough to prove shit.

 

Toyotas last forever. My brothers 96 has 320,000 on it. Not any big problems with it either.

Fords are Shit. My dad has a F350 and it has broken down 3 times in the past year. And its not like little shit, its been $2000-$3000 fixes each time.
Edit: It only had 116,000 miles on it.

 

It's fine, don't worry. Potential damages that can be caused by "the human factor" are usually considered during the engineering process and safeguards are integrated into the systems of most modern cars (e.g. throwing the AT into park at speed will not lock the axle; tire-pressure monitoring systems, etc). Just try not to do it again.

 

You should be fine. People accidentally do it all the time. Worst case scenario, you could have chipped a tooth on the flywheel or starter. In an extreme situation you could be replacing either or the two, or both, but this is very unlikely.

I once had a neighbor who happened to be blond do this at least once a month to a Volvo wagon. Makes a nasty noise when the starter gear tries to engage the ring gear on the flywheel, somehow that Volvo just put up with the abuse. C cups tend to compensate for a lot of other short comings.

 

The OP said nothing about hearing any grinding noise (which is what usually happens when you do this) - but said (twice) that his truck "went off". I take that to mean that the engine stopped running and then he had to restart it.

Does the computer on these trucks shut the engine down if you try to start it when it's already running to protect the starter & flywheel teeth? Just a guess... I'm not testing that theory on MY truck. LOL

 

I've seen somebody grind a starter about about 6 seconds without the car having any issues. You should be fine

But no, you should be fine, ive done it once or twice cause I was used to my Liberty which was so much louder.

 

my '10 engine manual says there is a feature that's supposed to disengage the starter if the engine is running but i tried to crank it deliberately and it engaged...ground those gears...and the engine cut out. maybe that's how this crank hold function works?

yea i did it last night on accident also, my engine just shut off and i restarted it and no problem, wen i did it in my old chevy it made a horrible noise, and same in an old ford i had

your truck will be fine.. I have done it plenty of times on many of my cars and none of them ever broke down or nothing bad ever happened..
