So sorry to hear that Dave, but you made Nero's life the best it could have possibly been, and he'll be eternally grateful for that. Stay strong brother.

Thank you for this. So many great dogs in need of loving homes. It would be nice to live in a world where rescues weren't needed, but as long as there is, we will always adopt through them, and support them and the people that do so much for animals in need.

We've always adopted mature dogs. We've also adopted a couple of elderly dogs now. But after losing 3 in the last 4 years, we are tired. Don't get me wrong. It's been very rewarding, but I become attached so easily. It just guts me every time to lose one. This morning was super tough. I miss the routine of helping Nero up and out, then preparing his breakfast and meds, and having my morning coffee with him while he eats. And I've been taking Wednesday mornings off for his weekly physio appointment.

I'm not saying we'll never adopt an elderly dog again, but for now, I think we'll just be a 3 dog family. Our youngest is two. Our oldest is six. It's that time of year when we take road trips to the cottage. Fifteen hours each way. With three dogs, we can finally take just one vehicle. Nero will coming to. He loved the lake, and that is where we will scatter his ashes.

    My favourite picture of him...IMG_2111.jpg
    He looks so happy!

I get it.....I'd be the same way too. After my first lab....when I was younger and didn't know any better I've only rescued as well. We are on our 3rd and 4th rescue labs. We've discussed rescuing an older one but haven't just because how we'd get too attached. .....I give you and your wife a ton of credit. Very nice place for his ashes as well

He was an amazing dog! So smart. After a lifetime of neglect, he seemed to know his life was drastically better. There were no aggression issues. He was just ready to embrace a new life, and he did so lovingly, and with such zest. Never any fear. Always ready to hit the open road. Took to the boat like he'd spent his life on the water. The forest held no bogeymen. There was simply nothing left in the world for him to fear. He had already lived through hell.

Thank you to everyone for your kind words.

Holy chit, I've done a lot already!!
I'm tearing up reading all about Nero. Glad you gave him what he deserved, and I am so sorry for your loss. He sounds like he was a wonderful companion.

Sorry to hear about Nero. Sounds like his last years were pretty good and good on you for making them better years for him.

He's doing much better, thanks for asking! We took him to his regular vet on Tuesday for a follow up and stool sample test. Turns out his hookworm is back unfortunately  He got it back in November, and ever since then we had him on a heartworm medication that we were good about feeding him every month. Even had him tested a month after he initially got and it came back negative. Luckily since the heartworm meds failed, I can file a claim with Sentinel and they'll pay for some parts of his treatment, which will be about $250 worth. It'll be nice to offset the rest of the bill! Overall I'm thrilled to have him happy and healthy again, with firmer poops.

I was away at a bachelor party in Nashville for 4 days. I was going through dog withdrawals. 4 days is WAY too long without seeing my boys!
