I know that they can fix it right now because it is "warranty work" and not "recall work," but I've seen a few questions posted in this thread that have asked about it. Just sharing my experience so that others can know what to expect. I haven't seen many reports on someone actually going in to the dealership to verify this, so I'm tying to help out some others that have questions.

I believe Sport and SR5 sales make up 75% of non-fleet sales. how does that help them?

The World has gone Cheap. Cheap Owners pay people $hit wages. $hit-wage Service-Managers look at their cost-of-parts and wages vs profits in labor-overcharges. Why care about customer satisfaction, because where else you gonna go? $hit-wage service workers could really give-a-$hit, the longer it takes the better. So, we, the not-so-$hit-wage earners, purchase $hit-products, get a recall notice, and have to lose our $hit wages waiting on our $hit product to get a bit less $hitty. I $hit you not.

    Ditto. Same here.

Except, this is the first new vehicle I have purchased, all others were used. So it really leaves a bad taste for my first new vehicle.

My *second diff* that they replaced about 4k miles in because of the howl. This one is howling like a banshee too. I'm not on the recall list:

Toyota to expand Tacoma output in Mexico

$150 million outlay to add 60,000 pickups a year in Tijuana

The expansion will bump capacity to about 160,000 units annually in late 2017 or early 2018, from just over 100,000 currently, the company said in a statement Wednesday.

Approximately 50% of all Tacoma's were made in Mexico last year.80% of all Tacoma's will be made in Mexico by 2018.

I'm in the same boat. I never considered new vehicles because of the drop in resale, and well, I was cheap and didn't want to afford it. I finally pulled the trigger on this truck, because I had wanted a Tacoma since I was 16 years old. I have been thoroughly disappointed, and I dont know if I will ever love this truck. I am hoping that this diff recall will fix the howl.

As an aside, I have owned all used vehicles: hondas, porches, bmws and all of them combined, spent less time in the shop by orders of magnitude, than this brand new Tacoma.

Me too! I wanted a taco for soooooooo long, finally got it and it has more problems than my beater Hyundai with 190k+ miles, it runs flawlessly. I love the truck but I don't know that I can trust it.

And to think these $35K to $40K mid size trucks cost double the price and are less reliable then Tacoma's built 20+ years ago.

It's truly a shame. Think of what this truck could have been? Imagine a bullet proof engine and transmission combo that didn't suck balls. This design is sick. The interior is sick (if it didn't rattle and vibe so much). I'd be grinning ear to ear every time I drove this thing if they didn't f*cking whiff on the drivetrain/driveline. Instead I'm howling, vibrating, leaking, squeaking, down the road in a truck that can't find a gear and rumbles to a stop. #letsgoplaces Now, finally, they are admitting that the rear differentials have a problem. No shit sherlock. It's been howling for thousands of miles--probably due to low fluid and damage because of it. No one with any experience behind the wheel thought that a howling differential was a normal characteristic of a vehicle. No one except Toyota service reps and corporate.

I'm not sure I trust it enough to really take it off road. I barely trust it enough now, that this diff could send me spinning down I-95, to drive it on the road.

I had high hopes that Toyota would hit a home run with this 3rd Gen. since they waited so long to update.Someone high up in the Ivory Tower got too greedy cutting cost knowing they could get away with it on the Tacoma. There's no excuse for this and it shouldn't be happening.

With a selling price of 35K to 40K and the huge labor cost savings Toyota enjoys by manufacturing in Mexico there is plenty of money to build these trucks with better materials ,components, and quality control.

Try again. You aren't comparing like configurations and you also forgot inflation.

    1996 XtraCab V6 Auto 4WD SR5 - $23128 MSRP (1996 dollars) is $36519 in 2017 dollars
    2017 AccessCab V6 Auto 4WD SR5 - $32725 MSRP

So the 2017 costs less than the equivalent 1996 as far as powertrain and options package goes.

And the 2017 includes far more airbags, a vehicle stability control system and numerous other features not present at all on the 1996.

In general every vehicle on the road these days has more safety and convenience features than the equivalent cars of the past and cost less. In general people's recollections of the "good ole days" are just wrong.

Now, as to reliability, maybe the 3rd gen does suck compared to those older trucks. But your assertion on price is dead wrong.

    1. Inspect for leaking. If no leaking, torq bolts.
    2. If leaking, take apart and inspect for damage. If no damage, replaced gasket and bolts
    3. If damaged, replace differential.

I took my '17 OR with seeping rear diff in on Monday. They cleaned it and told me to keep an eye on it. Said maybe it was assembly grease... not sure I buy that. On the bright side they did the transmission TSB and re torqued my U bolts without hassle.
