Jeff this is spooky, look at this:

This is a screencap from my particular FSM copy I used to start this thread originally. I notice the rev numbers are different, and my copy does not specify stud size.

Yeah, they updated/corrected the repair manual at the end of April from what I can tell.

So 33ft lbs for my 2016 auto TRD OR is correct, yes? I didn't see you mention the Auto with locker.

Man. Wish we could get a positive number. I have a 2017 TRD Sport and is listed as part of the recall and no signs of leaks so far. I am more than capable of torquing them down if I know for sure the spec. I have had my torque wrench calibrated and certified so no fear there.

If it's not a defective stud problem, I would also like to torque my own.

When all else fails, common sense prevails. Larger bolt larger torque number, smaller bolt smaller torque.

Do you have quality control documents from the manufacturer of the studs that prove your statement.

There are several people on here that have snapped their studs at way less than the recommended torque.

? It's not a statement. After reading many threads on the possibility of defective studs I'm asking the question. English comprehension.

Toyota's instructions for the recall state if there is no leak, retorque the bolts. Recall done.

If you want to do that yourself, it doesn't seem like a bad idea. Next time you're at the dealership they will likely still want to check the torque on them to complete the recall in the system, but that is all that is happening.

Recall only applies to trucks with the smaller studs, 18 ft-lb. If you have the larger differential, the recall does not apply to you, but by all means, torque away. 33 ft-lb.

Coming from the dealer side of this, DO NOT TOUCH YOUR DIFF BOLTS!! OMG, if they break because you torque them they are NOT warranty and I doubt the campaign will cover this. THERE IS NO REMEDY AT THIS TIME IF THE DIFF IS LEAKING!!! If your diff is leaking the remedy right now is to down the vehicle and wait for a solution/repair.

From a personal standpoint, if your diff isn't leaking I would NOT take it in for the recall. Wait until it leaks.

I can also see the wisdom here as well. If it's not leaking, don't worry about it. He's also right, if you break a stud, you'll probably need to replace the stud yourself, which could be a bit of a pain depending on where it snaps.

What's confusing and misleading is the announcement of the recall stated what the remedy is but now they're saying the remedy hasn't been determined yet.

If your truck is stock and you go to a dealer with a broken stud , and just play dumb . "I only brought it in for recall I know nothing" Then the tech comes out and says no warranty on broken bolt that just happens to be the area of recall ? Owner says" I don't know what your talking about , I just brought it in for recall" Toyota would never , ever deny the service . First they would have to prove you broke it and it did not come that way Good Luck. What if was done during the pdi check who knows. It's cheaper and easier and safer for Toyota to just fix it. It's a 2.00 part .

Note: common sence Unless you modify the whole truck did a suspension lift, larger tires , gears , then that's a different situation altogether
