Curious if those with a rear diff howl have tried to measure the noise level (not frequency) by seeing what radio volume is needed to drown out the noise---mine started at 500miles and around 35 on my radio. Now at 1000 miles and it seems to have increased to 40. JBL isn't available on the M/T so i know the numbers will differ with those builds but still curious how loud some of these are getting. Or are we just seeing a broader speed range when feathering

This is very interesting . I have a slight howl but If I turn the radio on at all I do not here the howl . I have a DC long box OR and this makes the drive angles different than the DCSB trucks . Ever since @smitty99 did his 1 1/2 " lift his howl almost went away and is wondering if it is not fully the rear end ? My noise has been the same from when I first heard it at around 2K until now at 7K .

Just thought about it on my way to work this morning so I thought I would get TWs opinions. But I know everyones hearing is different and it may also be that I'm "listening" for it as well so I'm hearing something that most would not

I thought about a poll but there's simply too many variables to standardize the volume across the board. But yes i do notice that XM requires a little higher than FM radio. I have been using XM but i will see what FM levels are this afternoon

You guys realize that having a howl there is something wrong with your diff(most likely) or trans right? Drowning out the noise to ignore it is pretty fuckin stupid

Go to the dealership start low and work your way up to full volume until they understand that you think this is unacceptable

Hope it all works out for you
    Good luck

Only reason to drown it out for this thread to see how loud the noise is as compared to other trucks. I have considered my howl slight , maybe it is as loud as most others.

Waiting for my 5k service to let them know about the howling noise--for now, me and everyone else on this forum knows it's not normal behavior so trolling to tell us that its not normal seems pretty redundant.

Says the guy with the '09 :smack: Unless you've been living under a rock, you'd know that 3rd gens have a howling diff and Toyota has no fix for it aside from the recall.

We are well aware of the fact that there is something wrong with the diff. Toyota Corporate has told me literally "...the truck is operating as engineered".

I already had mine in to have it checked at my 5K and they could not , would not admit to hearing it.

My trucks rear diff started howling just after 300 miles, now around 1,300 miles the sound is no louder but the mph range increased. Never paid attention to the radio volume but will report back after I remember to check. I notice the sound is loudest when going down a long hill and feathering the throttle.

Does this howl sound anything like worn AT tires or mud tires on asphalt?

Wake up! Hello! Yes it is an issue on Sport and SR5 Trims included. This is very well covered and discussed ad nauseam in the 3rd Gen Howling Poll thread.

I think you are correct that it is mostly OR, however there have been other models with it too, also think the 8.75 is used in models with manuals just without the locker.
