pull my ski nautique 4k and jet ski 1300ish all the time with zero issues. Just recently towed my cousins trailer from Des Moines, IA to Manhattan, Kansas to move my older sister in school. That trailer loaded with furniture and such was about 4500. There were big storms that whole trip and high wind warnings which really put a hurt on performance. Truck averaged from 7.15 to 8.49 all day.

I towed my 26' enclosed race trailer with car and "some" spares etc last weekend. Its an 07 TED Sport with 4 leafs, auto. I have a P3 controller and a weight distribution hitch.
Trailer weight is unknown, car is about 2000lbs, had less than 1000 in other stuff in there, I really trimmed it out to tow with this truck.
Only towed for 45min each way to the track, and it was completely fine.
I got a few looks, but generally I didn't think it looked al that crazy, I have seen FAR worse looking truck trailer combos driving around.

Lots of trips with the 18'4" Champion bass boat, but we tow this monthly to rc races, and once 700mi over Sonora pass to our yearly camping spot! 26% grade! The little Tacoma that could!

I had a 14 foot enclosed trailer with ramp gate. It was ordered as the most HD a 7k gvw trailer can get. 6 inch boxed frame and all. This was years ago and I don't remember exactly how much it weighed empty, but about 3200 pounds comes to mind. Your trailer is probably 4500 pounds and with a car inside plus gear you are way over GCWR on that truck. Sure it may have felt "fine" and you made the trip, but you're lucky the state troopers didn't see you. The ones that are on patrol for load violations will easily tell that you're over GCWR. Depending on the state that can be a massive fine or possibly get arrested. Be careful out there at least.

I looked into my trailer, and its listed as 3800 pounds, most 24-26' enclosed trailers are in the 3500-4000 range.
Not trying to minimize it, for sure I was close to, or at max weight. I don't think I was endangering anyone, I drove like I was towing a heavy trailer and had planned to turn back if it felt in any way sketchy, to be honest, it didn't feel all that different from the Dodge Ram I usually use to tow it, power aside.
I see folks every weekend towing massive campers that are literally 3 times the height of the 1/2 ton they are using to tow, and they look insane, if anyone gets pulled over I would think they would before I did, mine didn't look at all unusual.

I have an 18' flatbed that weighs 2200lb empty...with my 97 with the 5500lb hitch. I towed 7500# plus of brick/concrete riprap. Wondered how heavy it was and took it through the scale whence I discovered the weight. Taco didn't care, Taco didn't give a shits. Another time towed my Kubota WITH a 60's chevy pickup trailer on the trailer...that was definitely heavy and slowed me down a bit. That Kubota made many trips on the trailer as well as my other cars. Made many trips with cedar, oak, honey locust, elm logs to the sawmill and back with the lumber.

Not the biggest I've towed but the max I'm allowed to tow without a commercial vehicle operators registration (CVOR). Combined load is 9900 lbs or 4500kg

This load was much heavier. The 4Runner tows like a champ. The suspension is not the greatest for this though.

I pulled a s-10 back from chambersburg (150+ miles)with the new 2017. it performed better than I could have ever expected. I put her in cruise at 53mph and just stayed in the right lane. hardly knew it was back there. but the heaviest I pulled with the '98 was probably 2 fully stacked hay wagons linked in tandem. didn't go far and it really struggled but it did pull them. heaviest on road pull was probably my dads 1500lbs dump trailer with 2 ton capacity loaded so heavy the tires began to sag. that was so sketchy i wouldn't recommend it to anyone. and I'm running the 2.7L 4 bangers. not the V6.

Ect. when you keep it in auto and stick it in cruise the computer pretty much keeps it right where you need to be. it would hit 3800 rpm's going up some of the hills but thats not really all that high and its also the peak torque range. I got better gas mileage with the two truck combo than running out there empty.

That Load about did it for me going up a steep hill hit the bottom going 55 got to the top of the hill going 10 mph. Weights as follows trailer 2,100 lb mini x 4,000 about 600 lbs in the bed plus the loaded tool box and 2 full 5 gallons of fuel . id say pushing 7k . going up hill was not so bad going back down the hill was fun too as the trailer brakes on the trailer was disconnected .
