You're kidding me, right?... Please read my previous comments and interactions with him before you comment yourself, makes things easier for the both of us. He actually apologized (not that an apology was needed or anything because I respected his opinion too but provided facts to cover my ass lol) to me for coming after me because he had made a mistake and thought I was going down the standard 2nd gen bashes 3rd gen road. Read before you write.

they clearly got a better offer so they sold the car out from under you ......very common with vehicles that are in demand......

Common sales tactics. A sale in hand is like a drug to them. It's a genetic defect. They really can't help themselves. They lurk around while I'm waiting on my truck to get serviced, trying to make small talk w/fake smiles as they pass. If I go look at that new truck in the showroom, they jump on me like stink on shit. I like to play with the newbies haha. Car sales isn't even a real job.

I'm definitely not one to defend dealers but you have to understand their view. Do you know how many people 'agree' to buy something and then back out these days? They obviously had a buyer on the spot and went with it...

In this case I can't imagine any defense for the dealer. OP did everything right here, dealer did everything wrong. I'm also amazed to hear that it's a common practice to sell a car out from under someone after an agreement has been reached and a deposit paid. Makes me wary of ever buying anything that I can't lay a hand on first before signing. I knew dealers were smarmy but this is outright fraud.

Ah yes, that shit. In 2012, I bought a new Silverado.
(By the way, I love my wife. She tells me "I'll go with you so you don't fuck this up". Lol. She's a professional at negotiating)
Anywho, after getting the price right with the salesman, we sit down to sign paperwork and I see a $500 charge, but it wasn't clear what it was. Before I could say anything....
    Wife-"What is this shit".
Dealer-"Oh that's the VIN etching option. The VIN is etched on the windows. Makes it harder for thieves to sell the vehicle because it's expensive to replace all of the windows".
Me-"Don't want it, not paying for it".
Dealer-"All of the vehicles on our lot have it. It's done as soon as it hits the lot".
Wife-"Please explain to me how it's an option if it isn't an option. Doesn't make much since, now does it"
    Dealer-"Ummmm....let me..."
Wife-"No, don't get up to go ask your handler. Just take the $500 off. You said it was an option. We don't want it.
Dealer-"Well all of out vehicles get it"
Wife-"I'm not sure you understand what an option is"
    Dealer-"I'll be right back"
Wife-"No. Sit down. We don't have time for this back and forth shit."
    Dealer-"But I have to.....I'll just be a second"
    Wife-"Bye"

We left. About 10 minutes later, we got a phone call asking what could they do to get us to come back. Lol

(More to the story. It got even better once the pushy finance guy tried to get us to by an extended warranty and use them for financing instead of our credit union, but I've been long winded enough for today)

    TL;DR
I hate when they try to slip in a BS charge.
You ended up with a nice truck OP. Congrats.

Sounds like you were an asshole to them from nearly the beginning. The window etching is obviously bullshit. But from the explanation in the OP it sounds like you were nasty to them. If not, then whatever but you are dealing with scum bags as it is. I bought a VW years ago and it didn't come w/ an owners manual. Sales person wouldn't return my calls after I bought it when I asked for an owners manual. His survey came, so I plowed him on it. Then suddenly he returns my call cursing at me. Long story short, dealership employees are 99.9% dirt bags. This isn't a sterotype anymore. I've had my fair share of dealings w/ them and have RARELY had a positive experience w/ any of them.

Maybe the way to do it is - in writing - specify that in the event the buyer bails they keep the deposit - which is its purpose - and that in the event the dealer bails they return the deposit doubled! That would stop it.

At the end of the day its a lot easier to just let the 3rd gen guys say their truck is far superior. Any 2nd gen owner who says or jokes otherwise is labeled a jealous troll as the 3rd gen guys are simply stating the "facts". Enjoy your new truck op with the amount of mods available both gens can look great!

You should send a surrogate shopper in.

A retired older couple returned to a Mercedes dealership where the salesman has just sold the car they had been interested in to a
beautiful, leggy, busty blonde in a mini skirt and a halter top. The old man was visibly upset. He spoke to the salesman sharply, "Young man, I
thought you said you would hold that car till we raised the $95,000 asking price. Yet I just overheard you closed the deal for $75,000 to
the lovely young lady there. And if I remember right, you had insisted there was no way you could discount this model."

The salesman took a deep breath, cleared his throat and reached for a large glass of water.

"Well, what can I tell you? She had the cash ready, didn't need any financing help, and, Sir, just look at her, how could I resist?", replied the grinning salesman sheepishly.

Just then the young woman approached the senior couple and gave the car keys to the old man.

"There you go," she said. "I told you I could get that idiot to lower the price. See you later Dad, Happy Father's day."

Lol. She is, thanks. She used to be in the business, so she knows what to say and do. Usually when she walks in to a dealership, she has a folder with notes and figures. Basically she goes in having done her homework and knows exactly what she wants and what she's willing to pay.
She's much better than I am with this shit.
