Either way, if it spun would his valve train be any good?

5vze is non interference, if timing belt slips or breaks it just stops running. Line everything back up and install belt properly and it'll run again.

If crank snout is damaged due to loose balancer it MAY possibly be fixable, I've done a few, some careful work with a file and Emory cloth and things can go back together. Balancer may need to be replaced but they are available.

If the end of the crank is broken, well. Game over

As far as i was told by my mechanic, the crank shaft is destroyed. I haven't seen it. It's possible that the pulley was wobbling and destroyed the snout but I'm not sure. I'm just going off info from him

different folks have varying views on "destroyed" if it takes some file work and polishing and it can be made to work, thats not destroyed, its just gonna take some work, which in some folks mind is more work than they're willing to do.

a lot of shops wont get involved it something like that because if it doesn't work, or fails soon after, the likelyhood of the customer coming back is pretty great, no matter what was said or put on paper "it didn't work and its all your fault". So that would equate to "destroyed" and i get that. its time and money.

I've taken a 22RE where same thing had happened, the balancer bolt didn't get properly tightened and it wallowed out the keyway on the crank. I took my dremel and ground the edges of the keyway down and reformed the slot, used a slightly wider woodruff key, filed the slot in the balancer to fit. cleaned it all up, reassembled, properly torqued the balancer bolt, the truck ran for several years afterward. had over 300k on it when he sold the truck.

Understandable. I'm going to keep the old engine and tear it apart a couple times, just basically to learn. I'm a little upset, but at 250k miles, I'm okay with it.

250k miles is a little easier of a pill to swallow. At least it was getting up there in mileage

how soon you swapping out ? might be useful to @RaleighTaco for heads if it is determined this is what he needs. having a spare set of heads around isn't a bad thing. send them to a GOOD machine shop and have them cleaned and gone thru, you'll have cams with them so the valve clearance can be set at machine shop, carefully pack and store and they're ready to rock.

i'd love to have a spare set myself.

    Absolutely.

That's good thinking. I'm not going to do the swap, my mechanic is. I think he'll be doing it within the next week or two. If Jon needs heads, I'm more than willing to help out. I just need to talk to mechanic to get the ball rolling on everything. Found remanned engine from a company that seems pretty legit for 700. Next place to look at is you pull it, just to check their inventory, but I think I'm gonna go with the reman.

Anyone need a white hood from a second gen? It's been in my attic for years after I replaced it with the sport hood. Excellent condition... I'm in Raleigh.

@Sandman614 you'll have to make a few alterations to other areas of the truck, but your new drive line is tested and complete......

Depending on timing. Daughter just came back for a week and will be going back for two. I may go out there to visit with her.
Besides, saw your flip on CL... and owe the wife another visit to the beach.

I don't know how fast this thing turns, but it's amazing they need joints that close together.

It could only be because of vibration and the isolation of main structures from the bed the machine rests on.
