Timing belt

I just bought a 2003 tacoma limited 4x4 automatic couple months ago and the timing belt is consistently making a screeching noise when it idols is this a sign I should change the timing belt

 

How many miles are on the truck? Has the timing belt ever been changed?

Are you positive it is coming from the timing belt and not another belt or something else?

 

Yeah better be sure what it is exactly. Timing belt screaching/squeeling would only be caused by one of the idler/tensioner rollers seizing up. Which is doubtful, but possible. Otherwise I'd suspect a drive belt.

However it could also be the water pump bearing seizing and screeching. Mine did this. So is it more of a belt squeel, or bearing screach?

 

I think it is possibly another belt and it has 135 k miles on it but thanks for the tips.

 

FIRST YOU NEVER SAID IF YOU HAVE V6 OR i4 SO I GOTTA ASK??????????????? I4 have timing chains not belts and the chains never need replacing.

next the most common issue for squealing is the idler pulleys for a/c and power steering belt, they each have one and they only cost $20 or $8 if you take it apart and just replace the bearing in it

yes you have a timing belt and it should be replaced every 100k miles are at least no more then at 150k miles, at this point with your mileage, its time to change your timing belt so you may as well do the full monty on it

get the complete timing belt kit with everything and I suggest you put new idler pulleys or replace those bearings in them on the fan belts as well. they are notorious for going bad and making noise. I would say the fan belts idler bearings need changing every 30k miles or so.

that kit doesn't include the fan belt idler pulleys so just check those and order them separately if needed

 

That's a good kit except for the bandos, they stretch. Mitsubishi belts (Like that timing belt) are better..

YOU may have a seizing water pump or idler but you should simply take the accessory belts off 1 by 1 first and see if the noise goes away..

well those are just the fan belts so that's why, you can get his kit without the fan belts or ask him to upgrade those to the oem Mitsubishi ones if you like. 98% of people don't care about the brand of a fan belt because none of them last very long anyway, all the important and vital components are oem factory brands

 

Yea but you're still dealing with screeching sounds if they stretch! You'll be tripping thinking your water pump is seized again LOL..

 

ya, like I said, he has versions of the kits without fan belts and personally I just go to napa and get the "gates" belts when I need fan belts, never had any issues with those

 

spray some belt conditioner on it shoudld stop the squeal.

I would put money on the lower idler pulley on your fanbelts. I had it go out about 40,000 miles ago and it was only $35 on ebay. Being the lower one, it was super easy to replace from the underside.

i had to replace the lower pull aswell $20 from autozone. super easy so no need for oem.
