No, the diff drop is unnecessary and also not recommended for a 3rd gen. If you are doing up to a 3" lift, all you need is the bushing. That's it. If you're going bigger, the kit will be a drop member style, but I'd still wanna do the bushing if I were you. I'm stock height and will be doing the bushing soon.

Do you know what it isn't? I have had mine since I lifted the truck, besides my cv axles being straight what are the disadvantages and cons?

The diff drop? I haven't used one myself, but everything I have read from 3rd gen owners is that it did not fix any issues at all. I know the bushing does though. I would recommend it as the first step for any trucks with the vibe.

When are people feeling the vibrations? Around 55 mph on the dot my steering wheels vibrates a decent amount. Im not sure if its the carrier bearing that needs to be changed or this needle bearing.

Sub'd for reference once I get home. Just ordered the bushing, seal, install and removal tool so now I just have to pick up the oil once I get home. $200 and piece of mind since I will be lifting my truck and then driving Virginia to Boston and back to Virginia at the end of June and I don't want to ruin my truck.

Installed today. Vibe gone. Kind of a bitch. My needle bearing was pressed in way below flush so the ECGS tool did not work. I had to use a blind hole puller and get the needle bearing to move out a bit then the ECGS tool worked beautiful.

I had the vibe instantly after installing 5100s, and I only went to 1.55" in front.

Only thing is I am not sure I put it back together right. There is in-out play in the CV, I can't see how. I put it in as far as it would go and the dust cover seal sat flush. Then on test drive it moved out (see photo), but then I tapped the CV in again. No leaks -- yet. Does the drivers CV have more in-out play than the pass? It seems this thread discusses that but I am not sure if its the same movement discussed.

BTW, once I am confident I didn't screw this up and have to redo, I am willing to loan all the tools to Socal Locals...for a suggested donation of beer.

Your cv will have play in and out, it's normal. As long as it's locked I'm with the spring clip, which by the pic it is.No vibe and no leak  id say your good to go.

Are there any disadvantages to using the heavier gear oil 85/140w recommended by ECGS? I know the front axles spin in 2WD would this cause additional drag/slightly lower mpgs? Not too familiar with the guts of these diffs so not sure what would be influenced by the heavier oil.

Putting stuff back together after bushing install. Did you guysjust use the flats on the CV to hammer the drive back into place?

I finally got this done yesterday. I ended up using a 2' pry bar with a good fulcrum point to get the axle out. I found a spot in rotation that seemed to allow the axle to come out partially and then just pried harder at that point and it came out. Every other part of the job was pretty easy. I had to add about 1/2 quart of oil to bring the level back up. I filled with the same 75W-90 Amsoil gear oil that was in there.

My vibration is gone. Mine was most prevalent around 35-40mph with very light throttle or coasting. Needed to be on a smooth road to feel it. But I think that even though it was noticeable at higher speeds or different conditions my truck feels smoother at other speeds also that problem just wasn't bad enough to identify at higher speed. Also, my truck has no lift and I suspect my vibration was about as minimal as one could have. It will be interesting to see if the truck is smoother on the highway.

Thanks for everyone's input on this thread.

Armchair asshole? Is that you?

I think I need to buy this bushing. Since I lifted my truck, I feel a very slight vibration when coming to a stop. It doesn't happen every time though. I think I read somewhere that if you put it in 4WD, the vibration goes away. I guess I need to try that to confirm that the needle bearing is the problem.

Thanks to All that contributed to this thread - I think I've found the issue with my bone stock configured '06. It's the only dang thing that's loose on the drive train.

Now if anyone has the removal tool for sale or rent, please PM me.

I'm doing a lift soon, I realize most of you are on this thread because you had the vibe issues. But has anyone ever heard of a lifted Taco that didn't have the vibration issues due to the lift?

    Thank you,

I figured there had to be at least one out there. I've been lucky not to have any of the issues you read about on this forum. Crossing my fingers I don't have an issue with the lift I'm doing. But grateful this thread exists in case I do get vibes.

I'm not a mechanic but I'm very mechanically inclined. Always done my own work on my off-road rigs. But this bushing has me rattled. I'm afraid to put on a lift because of it. Just something about having to pull that bearing by sticking a chunk of metal in the diff that has a chance of falling in. Then there's the people who have said the pullers didn't work without modifying it.

How easy is it to screw up?

I've done two of them. It's not hard. If you can swap a CV shaft, you could do the bushing job.
