but don't they allow you 4 different ways to operate the auto trans. You have the normal, normal with the button pushed, then you have s mode where you control the shifting and then s mode with the button pushed. I don't know of any vehicle that gives you "choice" in your shift patterns. I understand folks don't like the shifting, what do you think it will be like when 10 speeds are the norm, or even more gears.

Since when is it marketed as an "offroad vehicle"? This is an ON-road vehicle that happens to be able to handle particularly crappy roads. If you want to go off the road, buy a 4-wheeler: https://www.yamahamotorsports.com/utility-atv/

However, I don't understand what you mean by "there should be more of an offering of the MT"...? They offer AT and MT in both 4 and 6 cyl. If you want an MT, ***BUY THE MT***. Nobody is holding a gun to your head and telling you that you have to buy the AT, even if the dealerships want to pretend that you have no choice.

Let me tell you a bit about how the dealerships work; they prefer to sell what they've already bought. They try to anticipate the configurations that they will sell, and order those in advance. Then when you come in and try to buy something, they try to force you into buying one of those. If you want to buy the configuration that YOU want, you simply tell them "THIS is the configuration I'm buying. Order me one of those or I'll take my business somewhere else." And you know what? They will order you the configuration you want! Why? Because those vehicles they've already bought are already a sunk cost, and there's nothing they can do to sucker you into buying one of them. They might try to give you some nonsense line about needing to find one in another dealer to trade with, but its nonsense. They just need to call up Toyota and say "hey, send me one like this!" and Toyota will send them a bill, and a truck LIKE THAT.

And even though they want to sell you what's there, it's also a win for them to order you one as it's a quick turn around for them. Who wouldn't like seeing a car come in on the truck one day and know that the next day the new owner will drive it off the lot.

Exactly. Which is why you just need to put your foot down instead of allowing them to tell you what to buy.

Pretty sure that marketing is one targeted towards off roaders.

I'm not referring to dealerships either. I'm referring to the number of built units per year from Toyota direct and their potential restrictions due to having to meet certain MPG figures from CAFE. Maybe it impacts how many of what trans configuration they build. Maybe I'm wrong, it's just a thought.

OP - I was thinking of doing something very similar except I code in Labview. So I would proto the hardware and code with a windows laptop and then when I'm happy with everything, compile the code and use one of the small SBC with a OBC interface and a DIO-8 USB for the interface. I haven't done anything with a micro since college a long long time ago (HC11 and assembler!). Any chance you'd like to share your wiring diagram?

With all due respect, maybe the Auto drivers should just let the truck do its thing and focus on staying on the road.

I don't think you would need to worry about any liability in selling something like this. Look at all the ECU tuners out there that are doing similar things, and even more in depth changes like fuel tuning. When someone plugs in a tuner with a tune for maximum power/torque, and blow their motor up, that is not the fault of the tuner manufacturer. Too many variables to point fingers at just one.

I'd consider buying one of these, or if you build them, I'll buy them from you and sell them to the community ;)

Can this device be custom tailored to the user's liking? Let's say if you wanted to change the shift points all up by another 8mph, do you just update it somehow?

So is this for sale? I hate the way my truck shifts it's so slow. As mentioned to pass anyone on the highway you really have to punch it.
