Would NOT buy...T4R is too heavy. Would rather have the 4.0 in the 3RD gen.

We shall see. It sells well and ranks high. I hope all they do is interior improvements.

Agreed, I love my 5fth Gen 4R But I think I loved my 4th Gen better, easier maintenance, a little narrower and lower, the new has 25 more ponies but lots more plumbing and electronic chit to get that gain

Shit I came from the SC 4.0 to the 3.5. I am not ready to go jump off the first bridge I see. I just hauled 30 bags of wet mulch in my Pro, and other then my truck looking like a Mexican lowrider with crazy hydraulics it did awesome.

If the turd gens had the 4.0 and 5 speed auto that the 4Runner has I would still own my '16 dclb limited, but considering the 3.5 6 speed auto is such garbage I traded it for a 4Runner and bought a 03 tundra to use as a beater truck.

Attached is the report I was looking at. Pretty pie charts are on pg. 7 of the PDF.

I was wrong, Finance was only 27% of the gross profit and parts & service was 43%. Vehicle sales (new and used) accounted for less than 30% of the gross profit.

That makes more sense to me now. The math didn't add up but then again...math.

    Lol.

If you compare the "Revenue Chart" and the "Gross Profit" charts the reality starts to set in....

New/Used vehicles account for over 75% of the cash flow for the dealership and it provides less than 30% of the profit. Parts/service/finance are only 20% of the cash flow and make up 70% of the profit.

Bottom line, dealers don't make money on the vehicles they sell alone. They make money selling you financing (that they mark up by 1-5%) and service/accessories. There is very little overhead on vehicles and if you can get one for under invoice price + taxes and fees, you probably got a good deal.

Essentially selling a car is the "vehicle" to get the customer wrapped up into finance and repairs.

So it makes sense to sell below invoice to get the customer on board for finance and maintenance/repairs.

You got it... That is why "the closer" always pushes the extended warranty, paint protection, service plans, gap insurance, and accessories. All of which are reflected in the annual report.

I have to admit that my last car I just bought, I turned EVERYTHING down but the Ford Premium Service Plan. They offered it to me for something like $3,500 for 6 years/100,000 miles and I fell out of my chair. I said NO to that. Then it dropped to $1,999. When I realized that it covers more than just oil changes (i.e. Brakes, filters, radiator fluid, transmission maintenance, etc...), is through FORD, and is good at any Ford service center, and is prorated if you bail out of the car before you use it all, I really didn't see a downside. When I looked up the cost of ownership in regards to maintenance on this car it ended up being $5,000 in estimated maintenance costs over 5 years. So it makes sense. Plus the service schedule is every 7,500 miles.

I've been really trying to see any downside and so far it makes financial sense. I've got 30 days to reconsider for a 100% refund. The plan covers labor and parts. Maybe it's too good to be true.

I know the service and maintenance charges are high at dealerships, but Jiffy Lube places around me charge $50-$75 for oil changes and tire rotations are $25.

I could see how people would possibly buy the plan at full cost and then forget they have it over time. That would be pure profit.

By the way I got the car for what a good used car would have been, which fit my needs. Plus IMO it's too risky to buy used cars...too many pitfalls.

Really nothing wrong with the service plans as long as you aren't paying their first asking price for them. I got on myself on my girlfriends 2016 Honda fit we bought used. They offered to do the 4 year 48k mile service plan (oil changes and basic maintenance), included GAP insurance, and also extended the already good certified used warranty to 120k miles. Price? $1400 and I couldn't sign the paperwork fast enough. Keep in mind she refinanced $6k from another car that she took a beating on and got nothing for trade in. GAP insurance was mandatory.

You gotta know a good deal when you see one. I'm not bashing extended warranties and maintenance plans at all, but at the sticker price they are not worth it.

Yes...what you just said. A good deal can take different forms depending on your wants, needs and desires. I don't mind giving in a little on something if I at least think I'm getting a deal. I try for the most part to keep my wants and desires in check. The only time it was a bit difficult was when I got the Tacoma. I mean damn, these things look good and I went from a 2001 Ranger.

A deal is a deal as long as you can figure out their voodoo math and account for all rebates and discounts. Ford likes rebates stacked on top of incentives and the math can get hairy. Toyota keeps it simple for the most part and won't typically give huge 40% off deals like Ford, Chevy and Dodge do.

I recently saw on line that a dealership around me dropped the price on some of their $40,000 trucks down to $20,000. My first thought was "damn they just screwed their customer base." But then they'll probably require financing through the dealership at 20% interest in hopes to make up for the deal.

Toyotas? I wouldn't believe it if I saw it, but I wouldn't bet money on that opinion. There's a good chance they know when the '18s are showing up and they have a bunch of trucks sitting on the lot that they have been paying interest on and need/wants unload. A few people might end up with a good deal. There is no magic in the deal. They either have a truck at a price that is fair and you are willing to pay or they don't. There is plenty of info available on the intertubez for JoeSchmo consumer to have a pretty damn good idea of the $ amount a dealer assigns to a truck, even if you can't know the hold back or other incentives. Bid low and take a chance. The worst they can say is no, and even then you try again on the 20th of the next month.

Who cares if they require their own financing? Go in, make a deal and pay no prepaid finance charges. Refinance with your own bank at a better rate in a month.

What dealer? I was looking for investment property but vehicles have a faster turnaround.
