Long story as to how we got here but I threw a rod and need a new engine. Found one locally with low mileage but it's from a 2013 truck whereas mine's 2006.

Will the engine just drop in? How interchangeable are the parts, like alternator, sensors etc? What should I look into/worry about after the work is done? Any ECU weirdness I need to think about?

It'll be installed by the seller's mechanic, who also pulled it out of his truck. He offered to do it on the cheap (relatively) so I'm tempted but a bit worried about the outcome so I'd like to understand the process & potential complications before I dive in.

Any tips, pointers, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Like unchained said, it's a direct fit. I'd jump on it.

I just did a quick look at O'reillys for an engine, the V6 on the 2006 & V6 on the 2013 have the same part number (their part number). Haven't located the Toyota Manufacturer Part Number.

Doesnt the 2013 have a bunch of extra smog crap on it? Engine mounts and all that fun stuff should be identical, but id think the wiring harness might be a tad different.

    Could be wrong

There's a smog pump that pumps outside air into the exhaust manifold on start up and shut down. Worst case the engine is the same and the wiring harness is a little different but if he has the harness off his 2006 truck it should be an easy swap.

The 2013 engine should have all the wiring on it if the mechanic has been doing this for a living he probably is up on his stuff and has done this before. Go for it You will alway's have some bugs to work out anytime you make an engine swap.

    Many thanks for your replies.
The shop this would be done by isn't a specialty engine shop - they do "mostly insurance work" as they put it. I don't think their mechanic knows a great deal about Tacomas, e.g. he claimed that the 2013 engine is 3.5L and not 4.0 like my 2006. He did think the engine block is identical and thought he might be able to use the new engine block and my headers etc.
The donor truck had burned down from windshield back. The engine bay didn't look burned much, there's some minor charring on the engine headers but even wiring harness and cuffs on CV joints looked intact.
Am I a fool for even considering letting them do this work? The reason I'm here is because they're asking $2000 for the engine and $1000 for labor; specialty shop wants $5500 albeit for a fully rebuilt/tested engine and a 1 year warranty.

If the shop seems confident about the swap going well, I'd sit back and relax.

If' they hand it over to you when it's done and it has a CEL alert, hand the keys back and have them fully complete their job before you pay in full..

The price you quoted is in line as to what it would cost in the Atlanta area depending on location around town. As for the higher price you quoted that must be for there peace of mind (warranty) in case they need to cover the mechanics butt. Like I said they will have a few bugs to work out before it is complete but you should be happy when it is completed. Remember "a man made it and a man can fix it. " I would not be afraid of a used engine of Toyota quality like the 4.0.

Minus the headers, it is a direct engine swap. Reuse the '06 headers.

The engine for the V6 Tacoma is the exact same from '05 - '15.

Yep - he doesn't know much about Tacoma's.

The smog pump issue might bear more investigation.
