Stretched tires

Genuinely curious, wouldn't this damage the wheel when you air down for off-road? Or would it be easier to pop a bead?

 

Is it purely a look or style or does it add / subtract anything?

I've seen it but not on a truck (other than the pics above). It's not something I'd do but, I don't find it objectionable either.

 

I think the thing to remeber is will it be safe and does it look right.

Top: really they're ensuring the entire contact patch is, well, in contact. Not an issue.

Bottom: beyond stupid and waiting for issues.

It has a double step lip on the wheel IIRC, ie 17" wheel with a 17" to 18" step in the lip. The tire bead seats on the 17" wheel, while the extra section of 18" lip sticks out. It gives it the illusion of having a tire that is stretched extremely far. Its the stupidest trend Ive seen a in long time.

Most of us in the hawaii section do not run that kind of setup, so you probably won't see it much there. Most of us in there are wheelers. It is popular in Hawaii tho, and the "Hawaii style" is gaining lots of popularity in the mainland too. Look on Instagram. It's polluted with that shit.

 

Is there no internet safe place for lifted street trucks then? They're a marginalized minority - something should be done to protect their rights!

I think it's hard to be someone that likes this aesthetic on this forum. There's a reason why people seem to like the stanced version of vehicles including stretching tires - don't ask me what it is, but it's been used by concept car designers for years and people seem to respond well to it. I like the aesthetic. I would rather have a lowered mini-truck on performance coilovers if I was going to do a street truck. People on this site seem to not like those either. But if everyone did the same thing this forum would be pretty boring and people would probably lose interest. Maybe there should be a section for the people who like this style?

 

Anyway, 17x9 isn't a very wide wheel. You won't get much stretch look unless you are running a 255 or smaller.

Having mounted tires in the past, that is a really fucked up way to mount tires with the rim upside down if an 18" lip is welded onto a 17" wheel. What am I missing in terms of mounting or is the larger lip bolted on like a rock ring?

 

Here you go! You don't need instagram to see people feeds. Some nice trucks here, but also has some atrocities. A lot of them are lifted with low profile stretched MTs and with absolutely no intention of going off road. And most of those are not in hawaii

Haha! There are some guys with show/street trucks that pop up in there. But they usually seem to get bored and don't stay long. And while we welcome everyone to Tacoma World and the hawaii section, this place is definitely more friendly to Tacomas that wheel.
Also, I forgot about this one, but there are lots of the stretched tire guys on the Facebook groups, but I hate FB...

Yeah there's a line I draw like most at some point. When I see an awesome car (since I could care less what someone does with their truck for some reason, but cars bother me more when they're done in a way I don't like) that is stanced and cambered out and think of how well the thing would ride with a good set of coilovers lowered enough to be functional and normal camber specs for street driving it makes me mad. Once I can afford to work on a getting a car built I'll probably feel better about it. Then I can feel the way I do about other people's trucks. You do you and I'll do me.

 

Yep. Usually they try to run higher pressure to avoid damage to their wheels with such low profile tires, which makes a rough ride. Tires are a big part of your suspension. Soon I'll be running 37s on Hutchinson beadlocks. Gonna be awesome off roading with 10psi in the tire

It all started in Japan. sadly, people in the US took the ball and ran with it. At first, late 90s it was tolerable and limited to the most otaku drift fan boys and a few VWs. Then the dipshits in the U.K. started to dabble in it during the big push of gray market cars from Japan. The US started to ooze the trend to more and more higher end euro cars when the used ones were cheap enough for VW kids to afford. The Japanese saw this decided to one up and reclaim their tends, and the horrible VIP style was born in the mid 00s. Then shit hit the internets and turned into the garbage above.

There is a reason for stretching to a point. Contact patch, preloading sidewalks, and the like.

The camber is just there to tick stretched tires on horrible offset wide wheels into slammed fenders that are folded and drawn to the brink of fracture.

Thankfully this move to full retard meant a huge flood of cheap performance parts on the secondary market in Japan... and I made some damn good money for a few years before our economy fell.

Sadly it's here to stay as long as bros have more credit than sense.

 

Stretched tire folks don't typically off road. I personally loathe the stretched tire/cambered look on any car/truck.
