Sorry to mention, it is a steel bumper.

Best place price wise is Thermotech but it's near impossible for me to squeeze time on a weekday to make it up to Monroe.

Best price and likely the best quality. They're the shit.

I bet if you asked they would even open the doors on a saturday, or after hours, to let you drop it off.

In my opinion the Prinsu looks to pieced together and cheap. Plus I like how Frontrunner makes it easy for me to spend dumb amounts of money to make my life easier when it comes to mounting things on the rack. They have mounts for everything. I hear a lot of the Frontrunner mounts do work on the Prinsu as well though. To each their own at the end of the day. If Prinsu checks all the boxes for you then they are a bit more affordable so not a bad buy at all!

I think both look great, I just had to fulfill the asking criteria.

Both are well built and hold stuff, just comes down to preference.

Do you guys recommend anybody local doing tube bending? I'd like to bend two pieces of tube with a flat plate on the bottom so I can throw my RTT on top of a trailer. Imaging something similar to the Relentless cargo bars (https://www.relentlessfabrication.c.../products/05-tacoma-bed-cargo-cross-bars-pair) but not specific to Tacomas. I'd want just a flat plate on the bottom so I can attach it to the top of a 4'x6' cargo trailer with a flat top such as this one:

I'm open to other suggestions but I want to keep it simple - no need for extra attachment points, etc.

Are you sure the roof will be able to support an RTT on top? Lots of the enclosed trailers Ive seen the roof wouldn't support it....least not without adding a support frame inside.

Another option could be Thule bars. You could get the feet and bars off craigslist for pretty cheap. Might be cheaper (and lighter) than having tubing bent and plates being welded on.

As for a shop I have nothing :) if I had a bender I'd say we could knock it out but still haven't bought one yet

^^^ Hmm good points, Nick. I can see there's a ton of bars on CL for me to sift through at decent prices. As far as the strength of the enclosed trailers, I have not a clue but I'm going to go take a look in person this weekend. A support frame makes sense considering at least 600lbs. mounted on top, bumpy roads, lateral force, etc. I plan to keep my bed rack for the tent when I'm really going offroad, but I want something at campgrounds when I'm with the family so I can drive the truck and leave the tent while keeping stuff secured.

Assuming the trailer roof can support the weight, Tom and I both have these on our trucks and they work great. Also, they have a high weight rating.

^^^ That's a pretty cool trailer! I have the tent already but we're looking for something more budget friendly for campgrounds. I'm thinking more like storage for kid's bicycle and fishing gear. I'm even contemplating a 5'x8' that would only go as far as a the gravel road goes. Here's something resembling my vision:
    upload_2017-5-8_11-5-9.jpg

I do plan on upgrading the axle and springs, multi-axis coupler. The 5'x8' is kind of nice because it comes with a sturdier trailer frame.

^^^ Yeah actually! This is the first time I'm seeing that thread but that's the general inspiration behind what I'm thinking. Looks like I've got 34 pages of catch-up reading to do.

My build might be easier because I don't need sleeping amenities, interior creature comforts, etc.

I like the first one. I wouldn't take one of those much off forest service roads though. Especially with a RTT on top. They are so light that the tent would make it more top heavy and be more prone to tipping than our trucks (since we have so much weight low)

Some day Ill build a trailer....its in line after about 10 other projects though

Nick is quite correct; these utility trailers are not designed to carry any weight on the roof; they are lightweight and flimsy, made to merely keep the elements out. I've worked with several of these trailers in the construction industry. Any weight-supporting rack would need to built off the vertical side/wall supports rather than the roof. Sounds like it's gonna be a fun build, keep us posted!

^^^ Some very good points. I'm going to give this some more thought and take a look. It looks like I need to give a lot more consideration to the strength of the 'box'. The other thread also talks briefly about upgrading the rigidity and strength of the floor.

They're just scared. Throw that tent up there and call it good.
