Who has the best deal for the blackout kit overlay to go over the chrome badge?

Amazon has a bunch. I just got the lettering for the tail gate. Just used plasti dip on the door badges. I didn't want to go the overlay route.

So is the plastidip. It's 8 bucks a can and if you don't like it, then you can just peel it off. You can try it before you spend over $100 on overlays. I did spend that much on my tailgate letters though, just hope it's worth it.

I did it yesterday. It was a lot easier to do and came out better than I thought it would.

ok ok, maybe I will give plastidip a try. do you have to sand the chrome badges? I would prefer to not sand if I don't have to. did you use straight black or the gunmetal?

No sanding. I just cleaned it really good. Make sure you mask it off well. Leave a good 1-1.5" of over spray and peel that part back carefully. I used a tooth pick to get inside the letters clean. I did about 5 light coats. Don't wash it for a week after. Youtube probably gives better step by step instructions. I just used black. It matches the black on fender flares and the other plastic molding.

Plastidip is not a great option IMO. I've done it before to two past vehicles. It looks great for a few months, then it fades out to a matte grey/black. Also has a weird texture to it and starts to peel on the corners. Doesn't last long, and when washing your truck you need to be careful of washing over it with a sponge or rag.
Another option is to spray paint them. I used 15-20lb fishing line, a heat gun on low temp and heated them up. Ran the string under the emblem, keeping the string right behind the plastic emblem. The emblem should come off pretty clean. The 3M adhesive stays on the truck as one piece.
Clean the emblem with soapy water and blow them off with an air compressor. Paint them and let dry for 5-7 hours. I used the backing of a vinyl wrap paper, the smooth part and placed it over the 3M adhesive on the car. Heated the adhesive back up to make it soft and sticky again. Then I pressed the painted emblem back on the original 3M adhesive. Semi-gloss black paint. Worked perfect, just takes more time.

what badges do you have? I only have the Tacoma's on the doors and I went through a little more then half a can. Don't start with spraying the front. Hit it from angles to get all the edges. Be careful and use light coats.

This is probably the best and most permanent option. You are correct, plastidip is not permanent but it is easy to remove and cheap and looks good. When it doesn't look good anymore ill do it again or just replace them with something like this.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01F...ota+emblem&dpPl=1&dpID=41PJT1+6AoL&ref=plSrch

That is what I was gonna do until someone talked me into plastidip yesterday. I wont leave it on forever and will eventually find a better suited permanent solution.

I have to agree with Kevin, I have plastidipped the emblems on my past two vehicles including my Tacoma and though it does look great for a few months it begins to look very worn quickly. Before you jump and say I didn't paint these correctly, I beg to differ. Removed the emblems and did 5 coats to each emblem and badge, sprayed from all angles and got even coverage on all of the emblem. Here I am 5 months later and it looks tacky. As soon as I have the time im going to remove them and take the plastidip off an properly paint them.

    What paint did you use>?

Quick aside, did you use a couple coats of glossifier after the black?

I did not seeing as I was going for a matte finish. I have a buddy who did and it had a very glossy finish and lost the ability to be removed easily (which is why plastidip is popular over paint), so at that point you might as well paint them.
