    shifting gears very notchy...

decided to fill it up with some redline mt-90

factory data capacity shows 2.64 qts

i drained old fluid into an empty container for measuring purposes...

    about 1.90 quarts came out...

filled up trans to correct spec....now transmission shift smooth as butter

i currently have 700 miles on OD

just thought id share my experience to TW

Nice. I'd do the rear diff, too

True that... OP how much fluid did you have to add to fill the transmission?

I've changed all my fluids exception being transfer case. I have a manual transmission.

Both front and rear diffs were not topped off to the fill hole and neither was the transmission.

I didn't check the qty's of fluid coming out just refilled to the fill holes.

The FRONT diff was the fluid that was black and had a lot of metal shavings attached to the magnetic drain plug.

Should have had your dealership document the low fluids. Documentation of poor factory QC only helps you in the future.

Dealership won't change fluids that are not due for replacement FREE... and don't think they measure whats coming out....

Were you able to touch the factory filled level by your finger at the fill hole before you drained it?

If the OP made a warranty complaint about "shifting gears [being] notchy," then the dealership should check the fluid levels as part of their inspection. If it was measured that the trans fluid was low, then the OP could request the other fluids be manually inspected as well.

You know the old saying... "want something done right...... do it yourself." prolly take a lot less time and then you know you didn't get some BS smoke blown up the ass at the dealership.

Not if you want warranty coverage.
Nor does it sound like the OP new what they were doing...

I know this is probably common sense but my truck shifts better now after 2000 miles.

    Yup, not surprised.
I checked my manual Tranny and both diffs the day I got my truck. All were low.
I picked up fluid for all three the day I picked up the truck just in case, so I was able to fill them after checking.
Dealership refused to check the fluid levels before I took delivery so I took it upon myself.

Not trying to hijack but here is my documented info:

My Rear Diff took 700ml before it started coming out of the fill hole.
My Manual Transmission took 300ml before it started coming out of the fill hole.
My Front Diff took 300ml before it started coming out of the fill hole.

FSM says 5mm below fill plug and higher is acceptable.
On the rear diff I estimate I had to reach well past 5mm to touch fluid.
On my Transmission I couldn't reach the fluid level but it requires reaching at an awkward angle.
On my front diff I could not reach the fluid level with my finger.

Was at my local dealer for some unrelated work today, and the service guy mentioned that tons of people have come in (over time) asking for Transmission Fluid level check, and not a single one was under filled. (I had the same dealership check mine about a year ago.)

Something to keep in mind for the third-gen haters... :)
