I think you misunderstand that law. That law has an explicit exception for blue tooth hands free. Yes I did look it up.

Yeah the 2.7 is tried and true. The 3.5 is a universal platform engine so there's no way they can let that suck and get away with it.

Hyundai is pretty good stuff. Couple in the family that are rock star appliances, which is what they are built to be. And come out of the box w/100k warranties.

You might pick another comparison point.

While I'm no third gen fan (for other reasons) I do think this is all worth a bit of self inspection.

4 blown shocks seems odd, as well as a leaky PS pump.

We had a 2011, countless issues and when it was traded into the dealer they couldn't even start it because the brake sensor went out. It just felt like a cheap pos too, you could hear the door seals separate when pulling into raised parking lots because of how much the chassis twisted.

Apparently complete engine failures were major problem on those models too. (Almost half a million recalled for it.)

To be fair I went in to a trusted local mechanic for my 30K (now at 32K getting too close to the 36K warranty) and he mentioned my rear shocks were going bad and my tires were starting to chop, they were just put on last summer (KO2's). Already had the leafs replaced once and they're back to a squeaking mess too. So I'm not discounting the OP at all!

Just gotta get confirmation they're going out before I take it to Toyota as my local dealer isn't the easiest to deal with, at all. I still love my truck (thus the 32K miles on it already) but it's spent at least a few weeks in the shop since I bought it for various issues (October 2015 build date FWIW).

Mine are the wonderfully stiff (/s) Hitachi shocks that come on the Sport model. If they end up going out of warranty, it would suck but I'd certainly be throwing something better on it anyway and calling it a day.

If you have the extended warranty which you say you do, why not just take it to the dealer to have it fixed? The leaky shocks and leaking PS pump shouldn't be hard to address.

I don't think Toyota has a fix for the transmission behavior. It acts like that because they are being mizers with the mpgs and emissions. The tsbs back it off a little but that's basically what you're stuck with . This seems like a classic scenario where OP spent so much time at dealers trying to fix what he was convinced is a fixable problem that the dealers just started trying to sell him stuff! They were trying to get rid of him..

People keep going back to the dealer complaining about the trans.. The dealer can't do anything, if there is a tsb available it will get the tsb.. if it's up to date software wise they don't have any tools available to change how the transmission operates..

Weird shifting trannys and small hyper efficient engines are here to stay.. I bet we'll never see anything as big as the 4.0 in a taco ever again..

Jack em up and enjoy them!!

This is nothing new at all. Toyota is notorious for power steering issues. If it is not the lines leaking, it is the power steering pump itself. I can't tell you how many roll into my work with leaking steering components. The racks usually endure though. As for the shocks, same. They are not built to the best of quality. Something that you would be hard pressed to find (lack of quality) in Honda shocks. They typically go over 100 and in many instances I have seen them go 200K with the original shocks still intact and working good. Shocks on Toyota's are built like trash. Now 38K is pretty crappy for all that stuff to go out, since you are under warranty, I would definitely expect for that stuff to be replaced on the dealer and ultimately Toyota's dime. That is too low mileage for that stuff to give out no matter how crappy they are built anyways.

Now, as for your tranny, as far as that goes, you guys have a new 6 speed in there which I am not sure is a carryover from a different model vehicle, but Toyota has always built pretty solid transmissions. If the trans is filled to proper level then the only other thing which is causing your issues is the shift logic itself. The 2nd gens are plagued with shit shifting issues on the A5's as well.

I know this wasn't the reply you were looking for, but I'm just being honest here.

Funny that you mention, this NHTSA really works. Two months ago I wrote to complain about Toyota's recall and the wasted time turned out to be when I was told by the
dealer that the technician will inspect my rear leaf springs and thy will let me know if need to be replaced. Last week I received a letter from them asking if I stand behind my claims and to sign down to the doted line. Of course I did, and according to them the vin # dictates which has to be replaced and not the dealer.
Can't wait to see what happens.

In all honesty shocks leak over time from being cycled over the course of road conditions, bumps, off road, and loads in the bed or towing. Nothing more than a wear and tear item from usage. Replace with better than OEM ie Bilstien 5100s or better for what you use the truck for. I've seen this on many applications from cars to HD trucks. Dont sell your truck its a TOYOTA not a GM

So we're calling the AG over some shocks? For crying out loud get some 5100s from toytec, some decent A/Ts and move the fuc on already!

This guy in a brand new 4runner always comes in to my station for free air. He refuses to let anyone touch his tires and he even whips out his 40 dollar digital tire gauge because he doesn't trust our shop air chucks. His precious tires are the shitty Dunlops that come on all the new Tacoma and 4runners!
