    Good morning.

Looking for some advice from anyone with experience with the Goodyear DuraTrac or BFG Mud Terrain tires.

    Specifically:

    Goodyear DuraTrac 285/75/16
    BFG Mud Terrain 255/85/16

Pros/cons of running a 255v285? Anyone have experience with road noise and fuel economy? While the truck DOES hit the trail 15-20 times a year... it will also see highway miles.

    Tire Comparison -- https://www.tacomaworld.com/tirecalc?tires=285-75r16-255-85r16

    Thanks

    Pic for interest...

All I can say is if you don't do a lot of off-roading don't get MTs. From personal experience.

I ran Duratracs for 40K in 265/75/16 load C, great tire, no issues. A bit balance happy, but free balancing at Discount Tire, so not an issue. I went to 255/85/16 Dick Cepek Extreme Countrys maybe 8K ago. Love these as well. seem to hold balance better, but they are new. I am regeared with 4.56s after blowing up my rear diff. bumpers, sliders, winch, rooftop tent, I get 15 mpg. your mpg will suffer with tires larger and heavier than stock.

3 inch lift with Toytec Boss and All Pro UCA's up front. AP expedition leafs with Bilstien 5100 shocks in the back. 255/85/16 Cooper S/T Max tires. All Pro skids, rear bumper and sliders, Hidden winch mount with XRC 8000 winch. Dual Optima batteries with IBS combiner/isolator and solar. CMC. Auto sliding rear window mod, hidden CB, CVJ axles and plenty of other little mods.
I'm running 255/85's with a 3 inch lift/cmc and they're working out just fine. I think I like them off road better than wider tires I've had in the past.
As for your two tire choices....apples to oranges.
I've had both of your choices on various vehicles. DuraTracs, I really didn't like them. Weak sidewalls, average traction in all offroad/snowy conditions, but great on the street and gravel roads and (depending on your setup) at 285/75 could be wide enough to cause you trouble with UCA rubbing.
The MT's, awesome offroad traction in all conditions. They're not too great in really wet highway conditions, fine in the snow, and tough as nails. Definitely the noisier of the two.

IMHO, skip the DuraTracs. If you want an A/T tire, look the Cooper ST Max. If you want a M/T, the BFG's are dandy.

i have been told how much smoother my trucks feels than theirs

i have 255 85 16 km2s and the opinions have come from those running at style 275 285 295 tires

tire size and type terrain tire are two different things to take into account

The type of terrain where you live is probably gonna be a big factor. Where I am it is dry and hard pack and through my experience I feel like skinnier tires hook up better generally then the fat and wide mudders I had on my jeep... But that was in my particular climate. Your results may vary though.

Also people say that less trimming is also required for 255 85s... if that is any benefit to you
