Ok, looking at a Wrangler Unlimited or a Cherokee Trailhawk with a V6.

    Pros? Cons?

Or should I say to heck with that idea and keep the Tacoma

Always wanted a Jeep, maybe I am having a midlife crisis. All feedback appreciated!:mudding:

Screw the new Cherokees, get a real Jeep and go Wrangler. You'll love the solid axle. If you always wanted a Jeep, you'll always want one until you have one.

Wranglers are a love hate relationship. You love them and hate them. Sometimes all in the same day. I came from a jeep and would not go back. Plus the new drive line is not that reliable.

If you had a 3rd gen, I would say trade it. However, you have a reliable 2nd gen, and the Wrangler will not be as functional as a truck, except maybe on trails.

    Keep your 2nd gen Tacoma!

Check this out. I looked at two different brand new Wrangler Unlimited models at two different dealers, brand new, right off the lot. I went and looked at them on a rainy day because of the stories i heard about them leaking. Well, both got pulled into the service bay, and the first Wrangler the carpet on the drivers side was completely soaked so i said "no thanks"..............went to another dealer, this time the drivers side was bone dry, but the passenger side was soaked wet !!! Brand new hard top Jeeps! They tried to give me the "its got plugs and it will dry fast" pitch.....but i am thinking to myself, i have a 2015 Tacoma and have never ever had an issue.

A Wrangler is an awesome SECOND vehicle. I swapped cars for a summer with a buddy who needed a sedan when I had an Accord about 10 years ago. My god was I sick of that thing by the end of it. They're loud, leak, and not secure. Cold in the winter and hot in the summer. Cruising around with the top down and doors off down the shore was great fun, but the back and forth to work sucked ass. Forget the Cherokee. I think Grand Cherokees are absolutely beautiful vehicles and was highly considering one when the latest redesign came out but I stuck with a 4Runner and was happy. I'm not a Chrysler guy by any means but I think they make some really good looking cars. Reliability and resale....that's a whole different story, except for the wrangler.

it's funny that you say that my wife's first jeep (2015 Wrangler) had the same problem but we traded it for a 09 Wrangler unlimited (we had a kid) and we never had an issue with leaking with the older jeep. Maybe it's a new jeep problem

Im with this guy. Jeeps are awesome, my wife has a wrangler willys addition. However, a Jeep will never last you as long as a Taco. I am not a Chrysler fan at all but the wife wanted a Jeep and thats their only product I would buy. What year are you looking at because that makes a big difference too.

I think you have your answer there. Note that there are way more issues than just the leaky roof.
The problem with Jeeps is that it's like a bug that bites you; if you want one, you really want one. A friend of mine had 3 Wranglers. After the first one he said it was a piece of crap and never want one again. Then a few years later he bought a new one and had issues with it from the beginning. It was in the shop almost more than in his driveway. He got so upset with the situation, that he traded it in - on a new Jeep. That's when I wanted to slap him. He didn't have the 3rd one for long either. Now he is talking about getting an old one that he can build as a hunting vehicle. I just shake my head....

Wait for 2019, in 2018 a new model is coming out with new motor options and such. They are also introducing the truck version.

I say wait until 2019.... well because of new model problems.

Man keep the '15 -- Tacoma's are so good at so many things -- and comfortable. If you want an ultimate trail rig, go buy an older YJ or something to be trail specific to scratch that itch.

I personally think Jeeps are overrated. You're getting a Chrysler drivetrain versus the reliability of the Toyota's. I feel like the quality just doesn't match up. You'd really be paying for the name than anything else. Also, a "Jeep" is somewhat of a "me too" vehicle in the off road community. Everyone else has one. I say stick with the Tacoma.

Go look for Jeep or Wrangler form, there's gotta be a few out there, see what the owners of such are saying!

I have had Jeep CJ5 and Sport Truck...both were excellent vehicles...the CJ5 was (imo) last of the great short wheel base jeeps before moving to more road friendly designs. I owned both vehicles for many years. The CJ was easy and cheap to work on, great off road and mostly reliable. It was the most fun I have had on 4 wheels. On the downside though, it was a terrible daily driver. Loud, hot, cold, wet, short wheel base made for some really interesting ice driving...and I never really felt I was safe in the vehicle. The final straw for me was driving through a cold, windy winter rain/sleet storm when the soft top blew off (aftermarket top)...and wouldn't snap completely back on. Was the worst 4 hours of my driving life completing the drive hanging out for all the elements to punish...sold it within 2 weeks of that drive (on the plus side...sold it for significantly more than I had into her.) I am in the market for a new vehicle (Taco at top of my list currently) and a Jeep is not even in the picture...certainly not a Cherokee.

I've owned Jeeps. They will force you to buy tools. LOTS of tools. Learn to like electrical issues. Rust. No security whatsoever if soft top.

Never never never never buy a new jeep!!!!! They have focused toward the newer market like the raptor. Unless you want to pay another 30k for a nice kit buy a old cj5. Those things are so customizable and you can drop a chevy in her and change the gear ratio and your set for the real rubicon.

I like to wander through Toyota sales lots, whenever I travel & have the time. At one location, the Jeep dealership was just a block away. Found myself really liking the Rubicon & pictured the summer fun w/ the top off. Also, unlimited aftermarket products. I think I would only have a Jeep as a spare vehicle. They sure look fun, though !
