Timing belt

Hi There. I have a 2004 tacoma extra cab 2wd with the trd package. It's sr5 and has a 6 foot bed. I have 104,000 miles on it. I have not changed the timing best. Am I living dangerously? Also, I bought the trd just to not get stuck in mud, as I do traffic data collection in muddy areas but would like to know how well the trd 2wd does off road. Thank You for any info.

 

i think it's supposed to be changed at 90,000 miles. i plan on changing mine at 100,000.

 

The 5vz-fe (3.4l V6) is a non interference engine that means at TDC (top dead center) and the valves open the piston will NOT touch them. So if your timing belt breaks you will not destory you motor, you will only be stranded untill you get a new belt. And search around and you will find ALOT of answers. While you replace, you should also replace the water pump and thermostat since your already in there. And a TRD Prerunner is just fine with the locker engaged.

 

i changed mine at 87k. i just cant take chances

 

I bought my truck used w/ 146,00 and did the belt at 156,000 just to get it done. The original belt and water pump were in there w/ a huge crust of dried up coolant everywhere. Please do your t belt as soon as possible!

 

how much did it run you for the whole thing??/ I have 128k on my truck and it was replaced at 60k so i'm almost due for another timing belt, water pump, and thermostat.

 

I honestly don't remember. I got everything at NAPA auto parts. I got a gates belt, what ever brand of water pump they have there, and some black permatex sealent for the water pump gasket. I want to say $120 but don't quote me on that.

 

oh cool.. so it's not that much for the parts.. labor must be a little high though i'm guessing...??... i've replaced timing belts on a few 4 cylinder cars, but never on a v6 or v8 so i'm not sure if I trust myself to do the job.. lol

 

My dad and I did it and it really isnt that bad. It is just time consuming. Our problem was not having the right tools and breaking like 3 socket drivers on the factory tight bolts.

 

I'm at 125k on mine. I'm going to change mine next week. I found a website that sells Toyota parts pretty cheap, The Water Pump, Thermostat, and timing belt for less than $170. The website btw is http://www.toyotapartscheap.com/
