Toyota recalling 228,000 Tacoma's due to oil leaks and possible loss of control of vehicle

Can anyone definitively settle the torque specs? Pics both show 1 way or another but based on bolt strength, there is no way I can see torquing an M10 less than an M8 bolt. The OR/Manual/Locker model with the 8.8" rear end and M10 bolts should be IMHO up to 33 ft lbs which is what the bolt is rated for and the Non-locker/non-diff lock with the 8" rear and M8 bolts should be up to 18 ft-lbs which is what those bolts are rated for*

*based on class 8.8 fasteners.

 

Took truck in for 10k mile service. Apparently I was the first one service rep had seen with the weeping diff. He had no idea there was a recall out. Agreed to give me a loaner for the night (rav4) and techs would call hq in the morning. To be contd.

What it looked like.

 

The only vehicle I owned that has ever leaked gear oil from the differential was built by Government Motors "GM"

 

As far as I can tell there was an error in the repair manual previously. The repair manual was corrected/updated on April 26, 2017 on TIS. As of right now for 2016-2017 models, all M8 applications (automatic transmission without locker) list 18 ft-lb and all M10 applications (manual transmission and all models with locker) list 33 ft-lb.

My other post which was quoted has the most current, up to date information.

My goal is "as tight as I can manage plus 1/4 turn".

2016 TRD Sport DCLB on the recall list, but no visible signs of leaking.

Called the dealer I purchased from and they hadn't heard of the recall. After a few minutes on hold while looking into it, they confirmed they had no information on the timeframe for/availability of parts and confirmed that I'd have to leave the truck if showed signs of leakage.

Called the dealer closest to me now, they also apparently hadn't heard of the recall. They did, however, say that they had the necessary parts available (gasket and bolts) to do the fix if the inspection showed a leak. I was surprised by that after reading through this entire thread, so I asked him to please confirm that tomorrow before I brought it in, and that I'd call back in the afternoon.

Also said they had a truck available as a loaner, so if the dealer can confirm they have all parts as well as a truck available for loaner, I may bite the bullet and take it in. Want to keep on the toyotacare and get the free oil change.

The tricky part is im a week or two from a beautiful Leer 180 coming in so I really don't want to surrender for half the summer! Not even sure how that would work, guess the shop would have to hang onto it and await payment..for a few months.

Will update tomorrow. I don't believe that they have the parts to do the fix if it is in fact leaking (but not damaged).

However, if the OR people can get the fix done right away under warranty, dealers must have the right parts available--or am I missing something? Is it an allocation issue?

 

I haven't heard back. Still driving the 4runner loaner.

Neither of your dealer interactions sound confident, as neither of them had heard of the recall. If you take it it, I would choose the dealer closest to you saying they had the parts.

Alternatively, you can choose not to take it in now, but wait until you get the recall notice in June and/or until Toyota has a consistent protocol going. Sounds like you would be fine, as you have not seen any leak.

In retrospect, I wish I would have waited, as my truck is now confiscated. I found two small seeps on mine. I think I would have been fine waiting.

 

My 2016 was part of the recall. Also my roof was leaking from I'm guessing from the roof rack install. I only noticed the seatbelt getting wet sometimes and I never thought anything of it. The passenger side always had a little bit of water after rain on the weather tech mats, but didn't think anything of it either. When I brought it in for the recall, I brought up the issue and they found mold underneath the weather tech mats on the carpets so they have to replace all that for me. I got an awesome rental though! Free of charge!

 

I got my truck back. It was not on the recall list but the diff was leaking. They replaced carrier gasket and drain&fill plug gaskets and tightened the M10 sized thread carrier nuts to 33 ft-lbs for the rear diff locker.

I bet someone at the assembly line got confused and was setting the torque drivers to 18 ft-lbs for these.

But so far so good. I'm really happy to be back in my truck.

 

I was talking about taking it in and having the dealership repair the issue if there was a leak, not getting underneath and looking to see if there was one. I was referring to the people who had leaks and were trying to fix the issue themselves.

Trying to get any update. I'm told there is no update and there is no estimate of the time of fix.

The rep. said since it's a new vehicle they don't want to simply replace the faulty part with another faulty part. She may have just made that up though.

Sounds like they don't know what's really wrong and they're still trying to figure it out.

From the initial release, it sounded like they already had a fix protocol, i.e., if no leak, re torque; if leak, check for damage, if no damage replace gasket and re torque, etc.

From our initial real world experiences though, they're not sure what to do.

Maybe after a couple beers and finding an equivalent CamryWorld forum, the Camry will start to look sexy to me....

 

Not good, just made my appt. 23k on the odometer...

 

My dealer told me yesterday that this could take months to fix. How hard could it be to fix the damn gasket? 2nd gens have this issue? It's not like we are trying to build the space shuttle. The Ford Roush trucks are looking better and better.

 

My 2011 second gen has this issue. A couple of nuts will come loose and it starts leaking. First time around 25k, second time around 45k. Recently at 55k the front diff start leaking as well.

 

After I get it inspected tomorrow I have to leave it. Service manager said (projected) mid-Jun for parts. She said two other Tacomas are parked there waiting. Unbelievable...

 

Yeah I don't really get it, a gasket + bolts.

I think there's probably something they're not telling us. Like maybe they're not sure replacing the gasket and re torquing will fix the issue.

This will change our summer plans.

I think Toyota should be more forthcoming or more transparent, not just we're grounding your truck indefinitely.

Surprised I haven't seen any media cover this early recall experience, as it's unusually onerous and it affects so many people.
