its not the DIF in my opinion... the dif leaks but thats not why they are exploding. thats why they are keeping trucks for so long.. its trans or torque converter related, Im betting. That hard shifting isnt good for the dif and prob ads undue stress causing the failure. not some BS seepage that they claim.

Any Phoenix area owners take their truck in for this issue? I have an appointment next week with Earnhardt in Mesa but don't want to leave my truck there for an extended period of time. I checked the underside and it looks like I have a couple spots that show minor leaking.

Mine is going into Toyota of Surprise on Saturday. The webpage says I'm not part of the recall, but it looks just like most of the pictures around here of ones that are on the recall. We will see.

    totally agree!

no f'n way on either the 9 months or them denying responsibility.

This is exactly why I'm awaiting the letter, when it comes, service advisor knows to expect a
call and then when and only when she says we have parts will I be bringing it in. All this shit
I'm hearing here would make me drive my truck right through the showroom! :D

I didn't mean media coverage on announcing the recall itself.

I meant I was surprised there has been no media coverage of the confiscating of trucks with no ETA, since it seems like an unusual recall that affects so many people.

And all those after market parts I was excited looking at... now I don't want to look at any parts or mods because it just reminds me I don't have my truck.

Crawled under my '17 that's listed under the recall and totally dry, no signs of any leaks at all.

Have my 5K service in a couple hundred miles. Wanted to make sure it was dry or else I wasn't going anywhere near the dealership.

I'm just curious... why are all of you people letting your local Toyota dealer keep your trucks for an unspecified amount of time? Just tell them to go fuck themselves and hand you the keys; in all honesty, I seriously doubt it would get any further than that. For the the stubborn service rep who wants to argue or make a point, tell the asshole it's your property, you came in it, and your damn well leaving in it! In all reality, it's not like this is a super important recall. If it were that big of a safety issue, then why are the waiting until mid June to notify everyone.... I mean it's not like you haven't been driving the leaky mother for xxxx miles anyway.

I kind of wish I was on the recall list, just so I could find a dealer to argue with... this shit upsets me to no end... and I don't know what's worse, the dealer just assuming they can take your shit, or the people posting in here willingly handing over their shit.

Anyway, my OR goes in for its 15k service next week, going to bring oil for oil change, and front & rear end Amsoil to replace the factory fluids, and let it sit the required 6 hours to have them properly and finally check the transmission fluid level. Since my rear diff is weeping, I'll have them fix that under warranty, and I'm not settling for a bolt tightening, they will also replace the gasket, and I will have them agree to such terms before I leave it in their care.

The issue is that they WILL let you get in your truck and drive away. HOWEVER, they will make you sign a liability waiver which states once you leave they are NOT responsible if your rear diff goes up in flames and WILL not cover it. So I'm assuming people here aren't willing to risk that even though we all know nothing would happen.

You wouldn't have to sign shit. And unless there's a clause in the warranty that specifically says if you drive off with it before they fix a recall it voids the warranty then they can't not cover it.

Just got a response back from my service advisor at Earnhardt and it sounds similar to what others have posted. If they determine it has a leak they will provide a loaner until they received whatever parts are needed to fix it.

When I picked up my loaner, they said the longest loaner they have out currently for a recall was from September '16.

Not newsworthy unless someone complains to the media and they've actually held a truck for a few weeks or more already, even then most woukd still not think it's newsworthy.

Personally I wouldn't bring a leaking truck in until I knew for sure they had the means to fix it. You bring it in early, especially to a small or remote dealership you're making a gamble.

I haven't heard anyone losing their truck and not given a loaner.

You guys never been through a recall before?

    Point well taken,
I cancelled my service appt and told the service manager that I would get back to her mid-Jun. I'm not leaving my truck in a service department parking lot for 40+ days with all the work I've done to it. I have a small commuter car if I need it.

Sooo...dropped off my taco for the radio software update and drove out in a Hertz rental car. While they had my Taco they checked the read end for leaks (which it had) and 4 lugs were finger tight. I was the 3rd Taco owner that day, 2 TRD Off Road, and my TRD Sport all drove out in a Hertz rental. Once they had them (and found rear end issues) they wouldn't let us have them back! I thought one of the Off Road guys was going to punch the service manager it got heated!!!!

Decided to check my OR, I wasn't part of the recall.

Only 1800 miles, found two dime size dark spots possibly indicating a very slow weep. This was the bolts under the diff lock connection.

Decided to check bolt torque, I used a small clicker Stahlwille (36 ft*lb max) torque wrench with a 6 point socket. I decided to set the wrench at 30 ft*lbs and got about an 1/12-1/8 of a turn on all the bolts. I did 30 vs 33 as I was in an awkward position and I didn't want to over push and overtorque.

I took a pic to compare too later on to see if it gets worse.

There is a very simple solution to the dealer keeping your car bullshit...

Make sure to take your extra key with you, give them the spare, and when they won't give it back, say ok no problem... Then wave at the service guy as you drive out of the service area in your own vehicle.

Actually that would be kind of funny... In a couple months when they go looking for your truck to finally fix it, and they can't find it, but still have the keys... Be like wtf do you mean you can't find it?!?! Guess you had better be getting a new 2018 ready for me then!

On another note, I think that all these people getting their truck hijacked, have a common variable... California. Is this a California thing. I'm pretty sure this shit wouldn't go over so well here in Texas, we take property rights pretty seriously here. I mean I can easily see someone pulling a gun if they don't give you your truck back, and I'm not joking.

Also, how would they be able to keep a Off-Road, since they aren't on the recall list? I can see them wanting to keep it till the next day, when the parts get in, but beyond that...

Okay, so what did we learn? Extra key, take no shit, take a gun as backup...
