The freedom of carrying a stupid amount of fuel is something you need to experience.

Until you have to pay to refill them... I remember in college filling up the airboat (100G) and the v10 expedition and thinking damn I'm glad this is a company credit card. And gas was only like $2 then...

I wish! Just trying to get enough time off to go on a road trip with the family. I did speak with my boss about taking a 3 month sabbatical in 5 years. That was 1.5 years ago...

I really want to go the route you did and stick a tank in the spare tire location. Maybe 15 - 20 gallons. Move the spare to a swingout. Or get that tank and eliminate the swingout.

Goddammit. Another distraction from the camper build...

Jeezus. 11 containers for 27 gallons of fuel. Who knows what's on the other side.

Cost of a single fill up has no bearing on this. You're gonna go through X amount of gas regardless of tank size. If you go on a 600 mile off road trip averaging 9mpg you're going to need 67 gallons of fuel. With a 16 usable gallons of gas you'll have to refill 5 times. With 34 gallons (say 31 usable) you'll need to refill 3 times. You can carry Jerry cans (been there, no fun). Also with the 34 gallons you can add ,say, 3 jerry cans for a total of 49 gallons so now you only need to refill 2 times.

Also keep in mind you don't have to fill the whole tank every time. I have 2 tanks. I frequently leave the aux tank empty and only fill the main tank. When I know I'm going on a long trip I fill both tanks and refueling is an afterthought.

In addition to that you might find another vehicle is low on gas.
Perfect example was this past weekend. We were in the hills between Big Sur and Fort Hunter Liggett taking some pics and a group of Czech tourists pulled up on Harleys. They asked where to find gas. Sadly, we had to tell them 20 miles back the way they came. They seemed pretty disappointed. We ended up siphoning some gas out of the aux tank into a zip lock bag and then siphoned into the bike.

In the future the aux tanks hose to the main tank is going to have a dry disconnect and a valve so you can attach a hose to it and pump gas into another vehicle...like a motorcycle.

Look how happy this guy is!
